Jailed for credit card fraud
By Elena Chong
A MAN who used someone else's credit card to buy two Rolex watches was sentenced to four weeks' jail on Friday. Fabian Michael Chiu Toh Hui, 48, unemployed, had admitted to cheating a watch shop at People's Park Complex by signing on the charge slip to deceive the staff into believing that he was the rightful owner on April 23, 2008.
He had gone there with his girlfriend who had presented the card, bearing the name of Liby Thomas, to buy the watches worth $12,000. He is out on $15,000 bail, pending his appeal against sentence. Investigation showed that Mr Thomas had applied for the OCBC Platinum credit card in April 2008.
Subsequently, the credit card was inadvertently sent to Chiu's unit at Grange Road instead of the complainant's. The watches have been recovered. Chiu, an undischarged bankrupt, could have been jailed for up to three years and/or fined for cheating.
