AN ODD-JOB labourer who helped an illegal moneylender hand over debtor notes to debtors was sentenced to three months' jail on Wednesday. Tan Beng Kwang, 42, pleaded guilty to two charges of abetting a loanshark called Ah Cheong to hand over debtors notes to two house occupants at Queenstown and Jurong East in January and May this year. A district court heard that Tan took a $5,000 loan from Ah Cheong in 2006, and subsequently could not repay the loan as he lost heavily in gambling. When he still could not pay Ah Cheong the balance of $3,000, he took up the loanshark's offer job as a runner to offset his debt. Tan, who was arrested on June 11 this year, was allowed to defer sentence until Nov 11 to seek medical treatment for injuries in a road traffic accident. He could have been fined up to $200,000 and/or jailed for up to two years on each charge.
