Jail, caning for stabbing student
By Khushwant Singh
Student Suffaad Aidi, 16, was hanging out with his elder brother and two friends at 4am on Feb 12 last year when he was set upon by two men because of an alleged staring incident. He ran off with a knife sticking in his head. In a district court on Tuesday, Zulhilmi Alias, 21, was sentenced to three years jail and six strokes of the cane for grievously hurting the Simei Institute of Education student.
He was also jailed a further two months for threatening his ex-girlfriend with a knife in June last year and disregarding an enlistment notice to report for National Service by December 2007. The court heard that Zulhilmi and Muhammad Shafiq Mohd Khalid, 18, decided to teach the other two groups at the void deck of Block 522 in Woodland Drive 14 a lesson for staring at them. Muhammad Shafiq went home to get a kitchen knife from his bedroom. Zulhilmi already had a similar weapon tucked in front of his jeans.
Both knives had blades of more than 20cm. The two unemployed men first hurled vulgarities at the first group before slashing 16-year-old Kelvin Cheng Soon Wang repeatedly on his hands and severing his right little finger. They then turned on the other group. Zulhilmi stabbed the back of Mr Suffaad's head. The student managed to run away and a short distance away he pulled the knife out and threw it on the ground. Zulhilmi retrieved the bloodstained weapon and fled with his accomplice. Mr Suffaad has since recovered.
