Jail, caning for stabbing student

By Khushwant Singh

Student Suffaad Aidi, 16, was hanging out with his elder brother and two friends at 4am on Feb 12 last year when he was set upon by two men because of an alleged staring incident. He ran off with a knife sticking in his head. In a district court on Tuesday, Zulhilmi Alias, 21, was sentenced to three years jail and six strokes of the cane for grievously hurting the Simei Institute of Education student.

He was also jailed a further two months for threatening his ex-girlfriend with a knife in June last year and disregarding an enlistment notice to report for National Service by December 2007.
The court heard that Zulhilmi and Muhammad Shafiq Mohd Khalid, 18, decided to teach the other two groups at the void deck of Block 522 in Woodland Drive 14 a lesson for staring at them. Muhammad Shafiq went home to get a kitchen knife from his bedroom. Zulhilmi already had a similar weapon tucked in front of his jeans.

Both knives had blades of more than 20cm.
The two unemployed men first hurled vulgarities at the first group before slashing 16-year-old Kelvin Cheng Soon Wang repeatedly on his hands and severing his right little finger. They then turned on the other group. Zulhilmi stabbed the back of Mr Suffaad's head. The student managed to run away and a short distance away he pulled the knife out and threw it on the ground. Zulhilmi retrieved the bloodstained weapon and fled with his accomplice. Mr Suffaad has since recovered.

SINGAPORE: A man has been sentenced to 38 months in jail for crimes like slashing a teenager at the back of the head, and leaving the knife wedged inside.

21-year-old Zulhilmi Alias, who is unemployed, attacked 16-year old student Suffaad Aidi at Woodlands Block 522, Woodlands Drive 14 at around 4am on February 12 last year.

The court heard that on 23 June 2009, he had also used a knife to threaten his then-girlfriend, 19-year-old Siti Nadhirah Ahmad Haron.

This followed a dispute at his flat in Bukit Panjang Ring Road.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Agnes Chan told District Judge Soh Tze Bian that besides this Zulhilmi had also failed to report for full time National Service.

A notice was sent to his home on 11 October 2007 asking him to enlist in December that year.

Zulhilmi chose to ignore the order and was finally caught at his home on 29 January 2009.

For these offences, Zulhimi was also sentenced to six strokes of the cane and a fine of S$3,000.

For voluntary causing grievous hurt, Zulhilmi could have been sentenced to a maximum of 15 years' jail, and fined or caned.

And for failing to comply with the enlistment notice, he could have been sentenced to a maximum of three years' jail and fined up to S$10,000. - CNA/vm
