A SELF-EMPLOYED man who scalded his young daughter with boiling water was sentenced to 18 months' jail and three strokes of the cane on Tuesday. The 34-year-old man, who cannot be named to protect the child's identity, had earlier admitted to causing hurt to the victim with a heated substance at their home on July 10. The court heard that the accused had caught the victim lying about having to stay back in school and having borrowed money from a teacher. He also found items which did not belong to her in her school bag. He scolded her for lying and splashed hot water on her while she was running to the kitchen bathroom. He also took a stainless mug of boiling water from the stove to splash over the locked bathroom door. Her father did not get any medical help but told her not to go to school for six days. On the seventh day when she turned up in school, a teacher saw her injuries and reported the matter. She is now in foster care. District Judge Hamidah Ibrahim turned down lawyer B. Ganesh's plea for a probation report to be called. She allowed the accused, whose bail was extended, to defer sentence until Nov 17 to settle his affairs.
