Any tom dick and harry can become contractor in Singapore?

SINGAPORE: Action must be taken against an irresponsible contractor who failed to install window grilles in a Yishun flat in which a four-year-old boy fell to his death, Home Affairs and Law Minister K Shanmugam said.

In a Facebook post on Thursday (Oct 15), Mr Shanmugam, who is a Member of Parliament (MP) for Nee Soon GRC, said the contractor’s conduct was "shameful and irresponsible" and contributed to the tragedy.

The boy fell from an open window in the ninth-floor flat last Tuesday (Oct 6). He was alone at home at the time, media reports said. The family had just moved into the flat, and according to them, the contractor they hired had failed to do a number of works, including installing the window grilles.

Attempts to contact the contractor were unsuccessful, the father told Mr Shanmugam. Even after the tragedy happened, there was no apology or visit from the contractor, the father added.

“One can understand the parents’ anger, anguish. To lose a child like this because someone has not done what he is supposed to have done. And the conduct after the tragedy is shocking,” Mr Shanmugam wrote.

There must be steps taken against such contractors, he said. “We must help the family to get legal recourse. It won’t bring back the child, but there has to be some justice done. I have told we will help find a lawyer for the family.”

worst... there r more dumb sinkies who dont understand that the windows r standard item made available by gahment whilst tenants should demand it be installed as a standard.

if falling over windows is the case, then they should have grilles all over the floors and over balcony.

The parents have a lot to ask of themselves instead of shifting the focus to the contractor. I wonder why they move in without the grilles installed? Most importantly, why did they leave the boy alone? If not the fall, the boy could have started a fire, slip in the bathroom, etc.

How does the contractor know that the owners have a four year old son and is it in the contract that the grills must be installed to protect the son? Just too bad for the dumb sinkie parents.

Where's the common sense? No window grills, then at least close the windows la!

And why do they leave a 4 year old alone in the house unsupervised? Only a stupid Mat will do that!

fuuck!! windows must have grill meh!!

Good point. I had a friend whose son died because of the window grills. This happened many years ago. It was during the CYN period. The boy stood on a stool and stuck his head out to watch a dragon dance below. The stool slipped. He hung.
