Dear brothers and sisters and inhouse lawyer like Wong Meng Meng,

is it constitutional to ban alcohol in little india? Under which law that government can ban alcohol selling in Little India?

what will happen to the Lim Chew Keng in Little India? How can they survive and find the money to pay for their children food and education and taxes to the government?

how can the government work out the plan to compensate the shop owners?

why Law Society does not comment on this matter?

It would be easier to just ban alcohol consumption in public places, but I don't know how it will go with citizens of the nation. Alcohol should be allowed to be consumed only in private premises and licensed pubs and restaurants. That would be fair to all.

Cheers!

The Singapore Constitution, with its many 'special' clauses, is not worth the paper it is printed on.

'Constitutional' is meaningless within Singapore's context.

You mean Singapore has a constitution? Maybe Lee Kwan Yew rammed his policies down our throats so often that nobody realised that we had a constitution.

Anyway, whatever the Lee family says maketh the constitution. Only in the states do people really adher to the constitution, in most asian democracy, they make it up as they go along.

They are shooting arrows in the dark to ban alcohols in Little India. These ah nehs could still drink somewhere else, get drunk and swamp into usual haunting grounds. The root of the riot is due to presence of Indian FT criminal elements from India running the area. The riot was their flexing of muscles to show they are master of the turf. Back in the days of the 1950s, the gangsters did the same to flex muscles in their turf. The Indian mafia instigating the rioters did the same. Sinkies are too naïve to understand. Those ah nehs working here for money would not take part in any riots; they knew the consequences if caught, they wanted their jobs. Those criminal elements wanted to control Little India.

Th constitution is wat the pap say it is.

There was one President, who constitutionally holds the keys to the reserves, and had no idea how much was in the reserves, asked about it. That was the last time he held any post of any importance. The Singapore flag didn't even fly half mast when he died.

Lim Swee Say should have an open house every weekend with free alcohol for all foreign workers.

I agree. In many parts of US, it is prohibited to consume alcohol in public. It is OK in a restaurant or private establishment.
(Incidentally, DUI laws are stricter too. If you are caught driving with an open can of beer, even if it is consumed by your wife sitting beside you, you kena as well).

But, banning sale is easier than banning consumption. Banning sale pushes the responsibility to the shop owners. Banning consumption needs more police patrol.
