'Ice' ring leader nabbed

<!-- end left side bar --> <!-- story content : start --> A SUSPECTED drug syndicate leader, along with his Javanese girlfriend and another man, were arrested in a raid on Tuesday for drug trafficking offences. Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) officers had been watching the syndicate leader since February following a tip-off that he was involved in the trafficking of 'Ice'. Preliminary investigations revealed that he had obtained his supply of drugs from an overseas syndicate and used multiple couriers to smuggle the drugs into Singapore. At about 9.25pm on Tuesday, CNB officers raided the suspect's HDB flat in Ang Mo Kio after receiving information that the he had plans to send a courier, believed to be his girlfriend, to collect a fresh consignment of drugs from overseas and then re-package the drugs at his flat.
The syndicate leader, 51, and his girlfriend, together with a 27-year-old man who was also in the flat, were detained. A search of the unit resulted in a find of 20.6 grams of 'Ice', 7.7 grams of heroin, and 30 Erimin-5 tablets with a total street value of about $78,630. A digital weighing scale, drug paraphernalia, four samurai swords and a knife were also seized. CNB officers also ambushed and arrested another man, 27, and a 26-year-old woman, who were seen leaving the flat just before the raid. In a related case, a 33-year-old male courier was nabbed last Monday at the Woodlands Checkpoint after 253 grams of 'Ice' were found in his bag. Investigations into the cases are still on-going. If convicted, the syndicate leader and his girlfriend could face a minimum of 20 years' imprisonment and 15 strokes of the cane.
