Colonels in Thai army have done it. Why not in sinkapore? I am sure there's alot of animosity towards the paper generals.

Look at the different emotions displayed by the various parties involved. Most hated Hitler and wanted him out, but they didn't dare to act due to fear. So, they cooperated with the regime and just followed orders from the high command.

The PAPzis have opened the immigration doors for more than 10 years and now you ask for a referendum? If not for the hundreds of thousands of new citizens, the PAPzis would have lost more GRCs and SMCs in the last election. Never said impossible. The PAP thinks that sinkees are gutless. I don't think so. Flood sinkapore with 50 percent foreigners and things will change.
Many major cities in the world have 50 per cent (or more) foreigners. Dubai is a good example. London is another good example.

If the govt provide proper care and priorities to citizens, I'm neutral to higher population as there is sufficient land provided two of airbases are closed down.
NS should be on full pay and NSmen medical care given free or at much higher subsidy than the rest. NSmen should have priority in hdb housing, medical care and much higher GST rebates.
Jobs should be given to locals first, especially govt and related jobs.
Sadly, these topics are not adequately addressed in the population white paper. Hence I do not support it in its current form.
PAP will not agree to do a referendum, but citizens can organise a petition. If it is signed by say 800,000 people and submitted to the PM, he ignores it at his own risk. He can't be so dumb as not to realise that at least 800,000 may vote against his party if he refuses to listen.
So, referendum or no referendum is no big deal. You just need to show PAP that you have the balls to sign a petition against their policy and there are a lot of people who think like you. Singaporeans have been brainwashed for too long, cannot expect them to protest at the drop of a hat like Hongkies. Must take things step by step. Petition is only a few steps away from protest.
There is no referendum law in Hong Kong, but 500,000 people on the streets in 2003 and a repeat performance in 2004 sealed Tung Chee Hwa's future and the fate of a proposed law to implement Article 23 of the Basic Law (aka Internal Security Act). Referendum or no referendum, to this day, 16 years after handover, no Hong Kong government has dared to implement Article 23.
