Watch live as Huawei unveils the world’s first 5G foldable smartphone at MWC 2019

Samsung a few days ago surprised fans and competitors by unveiling the Galaxy Fold in all its glory, well before the Galaxy S10’s name was even mentioned on stage. Samsung’s started the Unpacked event with a segment worthy of a “one more thing” moment, as the Korean giant knew well ahead of time what would follow at MWC 2019. Samsung’s main Android threat right now would surely launch a foldable handset of its own, one it has been teasing for months now. Thanks to a leak on Friday we already know what the device is and exactly what it’ll look like. The Huawei Mate X is labeled as the world’s first 5G foldable phone on a billboard spotted in Barcelona, and it’s the anti-Galaxy Fold, if you will.

Huawei did not unveil any new smartphones last year at MWC 2018, choosing to postpone the launch of the P20 series until March. As we got closer to this year’s mobile congress, Huawei confirmed that it’ll do the same thing with the P30 series, which will be unveiled in late March in Paris, France. That left us wondering what Huawei might unveil at the show, other than the expected tablet and laptop updates — if any — as well as updated news about its 5G network technology. Yes, Huawei’s teaser suggested that a foldable phone might be unveiled at the show, but we weren’t really expecting anything major.
Let’s not forget that aside from Friday’s leak, we haven’t seen any rumors about the Huawei Mate X. Huawei did confirm in the past that it’s making a foldable of its own and that the phone will sport 5G connectivity, but that’s about all we knew.
The image above revealed many details about the handset, aside from its commercial name. We’re looking at an all-screen foldable device with tiny bezels, as well as a thicker edge that houses the triple-lens camera. Thanks to a very smart design, that camera should work both as a primary camera and as a selfie cam, depending on whether the device is open or folded shut. Moreover, the main screen is placed on the outside of the phone, wrapping around one of the sides. Comparatively, the Galaxy Fold’s main screen is found on the inside, with a second smaller screen found on the phone’s back.
That’s not nearly enough information and we’ll have to wait for Huawei’s press event to start to see everything the Chinese tech giant has prepared for this year’s Mobile World Congress. You can watch the action as it happens live in the embedded video beginning at 8:00 AM EST, and you’ll find out accompanying live blog from Barcelona below.

5G is irrelevant until 2021 at least. It must first gain mass adoption by telcos and device makers worldwide. For now it's just a novelty for early adopters who don't mind spending a fortune.

This is called Generation Gap.

China is 5G-land and will rapidly and massively deploy and enjoy 5G. & @ LOW COST!

Many others have to wait long long. Pay through their nose!

Table turned. Who is 1st world and who is 3rd world?

It’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, which means that Xiaomi is about to announce a lot of phones. The conference starts at 10:30 AM CET (9:30 AM GMT, 4:30 AM EST).

Rumor has it that the company will unveil a phone that supports 5G network. Xiaomi has already showed this phone at various events over the past couple of months. The company will also launch its new flagship device outside of China, the Mi 9.
Update: Xiaomi announced its first 5G phone, the Mi Mix 3 5G.

But I’m more excited about rumors that Xiaomi is also about to show some sort of foldable phone. Will it look better than the Samsung Galaxy Fold?
You can check it out live via Xiaomi’s official stream above, and stay tuned on TechCrunch.com for ongoing coverage of all the news coming out of MWC.

I am quite surprised that they scheduled just after CNY. Should be rather just before CNY, and the rich Ah Tiong will buy it as CNY gifts and Ang Paos timely.

Would had simply triple the sales until out of stock!

Updated 24 February, 2019
BARCELONA — China's Xiaomi, the world's fourth-largest smartphone maker, unveiled a smartphone on Sunday (Feb 24) that will be able to take advantage of new and faster 5G mobile networks and cost far less than one announced by market leader Samsung last week.
Prices for Xiaomi's new offering will start at 599 euros (S$917.37) when it hits the market in May, Mr Donovan Sung, Xiaomi's global head of products, told a trade event in Barcelona, prompting gasps in the hall where it was presented.
Samsung, which leads the market ahead of Huawei and Apple, launched a 5G phone on Wednesday which it said would be available in early summer, with a US$1,980 (S$2,675.18) starting price.
"We think this is one of the most competitive prices for a 5G smartphone today and it's going to be available very, very soon," Mr Sung said.
Xiaomi initially targeted Asian markets, notably India, for overseas expansion, before launching in Spain, France and Italy in late 2017. REUTERS

it's not even globally standardized yet. prc has her own definition of 5g standards (pushed by huawei) while japan and sk are formulating their own standards (jp and sk are closer on this as they spearhead 5g rollout for the upcoming 2020 olympics). u.s. have competing 5g definitions among the 4 major telco mobile operators and europe follows whatever ericsson and nokia are pushing. and then you have qualcomm pushing its own version of 5g, a smörgåsbord of 3g cdma, 3g td-scdma, 4g lte, and 5g - 69k patents rolled into 1 chip in order to exact maximum royalties per patent from phone makers. whoever uses 5g phones in the next few months are actually roaming on 4g lte advanced features with massive mimo and carrier aggregation offering up to gbps speed. dumb buyers and consumers.

The standards war is going to continue until a resolution comes along, similar to HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray back in the day.

China has other problems which are far greater than the scope 5G and Huawei. Hint: more arrests, Meng Wanzhou was just the beginning.

And it's amusing to see some people here shilling so hard for Huawei. Let 袁腾飞 educate those twits:

It is STANDARDIZED by the BEST, the MOST CAPABLE, the HIGHEST PERFORMANCE, highest TECH LEVEL, the BIGGEST DOMESTIC MARKET USER BASE. The most COMPETITIVE PRICES, the BIGGEST MASS PRODUCTION CAPACITY.

Those losers lost in every aspects trying to DENY AND REJECT is INSIGNIFICANT. They are not capable of making anything better, faster, cheaper, and more acceptable, they can not compete and trying struggling VERY HARD to CHEAT. They are losers! The rest of the world will automatically Ignore them Neglect them and leave them behind in the dust and using Dinosaur Phones!

This way is the NEW STANDARD. Further they want to Kuai Lan, EMBARGO THEM AND BAN THEM, sell them Nothing! They can not afford to pay anyway! The rest of the world is enough big market and while they struggle and fuck themselves (masturbation = 意淫) Chinese would had moved into 6G and 7G already and left them in their graves! Who care what the fuck they try to deny or fuck themselves with? Ignore them! This way is the NEW STANDARD!

release 16.9 in 2020 is what telcos and phone makers should be targeting for where it's more globalized and massively accepted and adopted. anything below 16.9 (such as release 15 targeted for march this year with a functional freeze) is a waste of money and resources.

the money is on release 16.9 (release 17) late 2020. right now it's only for field trials and friendly user testing. massive 256x256 mimo antennas will only be deployable at very high powered base stations, and they will cook your gonads. eventually all tiongs in china with huawei 5g base stations will get their testicles and ovaries cooked to the point when they can't reproduce kids anymore. the world will rejoice.

Fast moving economy and huge dynamic product hungry market is not going to wait anything / anyone. By the time suckers wake up in 2020, the Chinese already completed 6G, which they had already worked on for over a year now. Rapidly they will move to 6G 7G. Those can not catch up will be left out and world will be DIVIDED by huge Technological Gap.

We will be definitely back to divided world worse than Cold War, and in telecom world pse remember the days of multiple standard divide world market.

When I spent thousands initially on my 1st few mobile phone, I got to rent a phone from fucking CB Singtel to travel to USA to use there. And yet, when I transit Japan there was not just one but 2 entirely different system NTT Dokomo & KDD something. And back home we had ETACs, AMPs, GSM, Zone-phones & fucking Pagers! CB!

Oh yes! We should be reverting back to these good old days!

Huat Ah!
