Elis Kurniasih was hit by a falling concrete slab as she slept on a Hong Kong balcony.

An Indonesian domestic helper has had her left leg amputated after a 60kg piece of concrete fell and crushed her while she was sleeping on the second-floor balcony of her employment agency's boarding house in North Point.

Elis Kurniasih, 33, was in a coma in Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital in Chai Wan yesterday, four days after the masonry broke away from above an air-conditioning unit on the fifth floor at the Chu Kee Building on King's Road and crashed onto her.

She was on a mattress with another domestic helper, who escaped injury.

The mother of two has undergone three major operations since she was admitted to the hospital on Wednesday.

The 60kg concrete slab broke away from a wall.

Edwina Antonio, a board member of the Mission For Migrant Workers, has been helping Elis' family since the incident.

She said: "[Elis] doesn't know that she's lost a leg yet. She has been in a coma because of the accident. We hope she will wake up soon."

She said Elis' uncle arrived in Hong Kong from Indonesia on Friday, but there had been no discussions between the family and the employment agency, Sunlight Employment Agency.

"Right now, we are focusing on getting Elis well again first, before we talk about other things," said Antonio, adding that the family would be seeking advice about whether to take any legal action. There was also a police investigation under way, she said.

The Indonesian Migrant Workers Network is planning a protest in front of the employment agency's office at 2.30pm today in North Point and a public prayer session for Elis' recovery in Victoria Park at 5pm.

"The Indonesian community is saddened by this tragedy and angry with the agency's treatment," a statement by the network read.

It also said other Indonesians had come forward since the accident to report similar "abuses" by agencies, including inhumane accommodation, confiscation of passports and high agency fees.

Elis was staying at the boarding house waiting for her next contract to begin after her new employer requested she start working two months later than expected.

Elis had worked for three years in Hong Kong for another employer.

An Indonesian domestic worker has died, four days after she was crushed by a 60kg slab of concrete while sleeping on the balcony of a guesthouse run by her employment agency.

Elis Kurniasih, 33, died at Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital in Chai Wan on Monday night, five days after the masonry broke away from above an air-conditioning unit on the fifth floor at the Chu Kee Building on King's Road and crashed onto her, according to domestic workers' rights groups.

Her uncle, Sudrajat, who flew in from Indonesia to be by her side, said: “I am very sad. The family can’t accept this tragedy because this is not caused by nature, but by human’s hands.”

Shortly before Elis died, Mission for Migrant Workers official Edwina Antonio said they were told by the hospital that the maid might not make it for more than two days.

“Her brain has been damaged. Her blood level is low and her pupils have dilated,” she said.

She was on a mattress with another domestic helper, who escaped injury.

The mother of two had undergone three major operations since she was admitted to the hospital on Wednesday.
