SINGAPORE: The supervisor who knocked down a pair of 12-year-old twin boys in a hit-and-run accident along Tampines Avenue 7 was sentenced to 12 weeks' jail and fined S$600 on Thursday.

Thirty-three-year-old Tong Chee Wei was also banned from driving for three years.

Tong had hit the two boys in July last year.

One boy fractured his elbow, knee and pelvis while the other suffered multiple abrasions and lost a tooth.

Tong was convicted of four charges under the Road Traffic Act, including driving whilst under disqualification and failure to stop his car after the accident happened.

One other charge of failure to render assistance was taken into consideration.

His black Mitsubishi car struck two 12-year-old boys, believed to be brothers, on Sunday.

One boy fell at the front right wheel, and the other was sent hurtling.

The driver allegedly fled the scene.

But the law caught up with Tong Chee Wei, 32, Thursday, as he was charged in court.

Tong faced five charges: driving while under disqualification, dangerous driving, third party risks, failing to stop, as well as failing to render assistance after the accident.

Court documents revealed that he had failed to obey the red light signal while driving along Tampines Avenue 7, towards the direction of Loyang Avenue.

He then went straight across the pedestrian crossing, colliding with the two boys who were crossing the road.

One boy suffered abrasions on his face, hands and legs, while the other dislocated his right elbow and had abrasions on his hands andlegs.

Tong was arrested at his Tampines home within three hours of the incident. At the time of the alleged offences, Tong had been disqualified from driving all classes of vehicles for 11/2 years, starting Feb 22 this year.

Yesterday, Tong, who is self-employed, was granted permission to leave Singapore for Bangkok from July 16 to 21, for business and to visit his girlfriend.

Police bail was increased from $10,000 to $15,000.

Tong will be back in court on Aug 23.
