Hit-and-run cabby jailed

A HIT-AND-RUN cabby who caused the death of an 80-year-old pedestrian along Upper Serangoon Road was jailed for two months on Monday. Tan Hock, 61, was also fined $7,000 and banned from driving for three years over the fatal accident on April 25 last year. He admitted to causing the death of hawker assistant Lee Kuee Huay by doing a negligent act at 12.19am that day; failing to stop after an accident; and failing to render help to the severely injured victim.
The court heard that he was taking a passenger home when he failed to keep a proper lookout ahead, resulting in a collision between his taxi and Madam Lee who was crossing unlawfully within the signalised pedestrian crossing. Immediately after the accident, he did not stop nor did he render any help to the victim. Instead, he continued driving away from the accident but returned less than 30 minutes later. Madam Lee, who was going home after work at a Teochew porridge stall, died of multiple injuries at 1.53am.
