Heroin, "Ice" seized at checkpoint

SINGAPORE: Officers at the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) made the largest single seizure of heroin in three years in a pre-dawn operation Friday morning.
Officers at the Woodlands Checkpoint successfully prevented the smuggling of an estimated 5.4 kilogrammes of heroin and 250 grammes of "Ice," estimated to be worth some S$880,000.
At around 5.45am on Friday, a Malaysian registered vehicle arrived at Woodlands Checkpoint and was directed to undergo a thorough vehicle check.
While searching the boot of the vehicle, ICA officers heard rattling noise when checking the spare tyre.
A small incision revealed hidden within the tyre several bundles wrapped in black and white tape.
ICA officers suspected the bundles contained drugs, and alerted Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) officers at the checkpoint.
ICA and CNB officers recovered a total of 17 wrapped bundles from the tyre.
Fifteen of the bundles contained heroin while two bundles contained "Ice".
The driver of the vehicle, a 28-year-old Malaysian man, was arrested and will be investigated for the unauthorised importation of a controlled drug.
If charged and convicted in court he may face the death penalty.
