Hawker splashed hot soup

<!-- by line --> By Elena Chong, Court Correspondent
<!-- end by line -->
A WELL-KNOWN beef noodles hawker who threw hot soup at a neighbouring stall causing the stallholder's arm to be scalded was fined $1,500 on Tuesday.
Lim Jui Hong, 61, pleaded guilty to committing a negligent act to endanger the personal safety of others at a coffeeshop at Block 233 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3 on March 15. The court heard that he and the neighbouring stallholder, Madam Lim Chew Kiok, 42, had not been on good terms due to their disputes on the use of space in front of their stalls.

That morning, Lim was preparing soup at the stall when Madam Lim caused a stack of bowls to fall over. Enraged, Lim threw a container of hot soup over her stall to scare her. The container landed on Madam Lim's right forearm, scalding it. He could have been jailed for up to six months, fined up to $2,500, or jailed and fined.

SINGAPORE: These two stallholders did not just share the same surname. They also shared a mutual dislike.

And, upset that his neighbouring stall owner had broken a stack of bowls belonging to him, Lim Jui Hong, 61 - who operates the popular Hong Heng Beef Noodle and Katong Laksa stall at a coffee shop at Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3 - threw a container of soup at Ms Lim Chew Kiok, 42, scalding her right arm and foot.

The latter, who sells 'bak kut teh' (pork ribs soup), had on March 15 last year accidentally knocked over the stack of bowls.

She was holding the tin container filled with hot soup at the time, and Lim took the container and threw it at her stall. It landed near her, splashing her with hot soup in the process. A dispute ensued and the police were called in.

Lim's lawyer, Mr Choo Si Sen, told the court on Tuesday that although his client had previously been convicted of a drug-related offence when he was in his 20s, he had since then build up the reputation of his beef noodles stall through hard work.

Mr Choo said Ms Lim's business "pales in comparison" with his client's "bustling business". As such she was jealous of Lim and had, from time to time, provoked him. He said Lim did not have any premeditated intention of hurting her and had reacted the way he did because of the shock from the loud noise caused by the falling bowls.

Lim was fined $1,000. - TODAY
