Gay Member of Parliament? OK, says MM Lee

Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew has revealed he has no problems with having homosexuals in Parliament, reported The Straits Times (ST) on Sunday.

Mr Lee, however, was more ambiguous about whether same-sex marriages should be allowed, or if gays should be given rights to adopt children.

The comments were made in an interview published in a new book about his beliefs, Hard Truths To Keep Singapore Going.

When asked about the possibility of gay Members of Parliament, Mr Lee said, “As far as I’m concerned, if she does her work as an MP, she looks after her constituents, she makes sensible speeches, she’s making a contribution, her private life is her life, that’s that.”

This, however, does not mean his personal views will become the policy of the People’s Action Party.

Mr Lee said, in the same interview, if he were the prime minster he would “hesitate to push it through” against prevailing values of society.

“You’re going against the current of the people, the underlying feeling. What’s the point of that, you know, breaking new ground and taking unnecessary risk?”

What if his grandchild is gay? Mr Lee, who believes homosexuals are born genetically different from heterosexuals, turned to the example of former United States vice-president Dick Cheney, who was against homosexuality but whose daughter is gay.

‘He says, ‘I still love her, full-stop’,’ noted Mr Lee. ‘Do you throw the daughter out? That’s life. I mean none of my children is gay, but if they were, well, that’s that.’

When it comes to same-sex marriages and gays being allowed to adopt, Mr Lee cited a “purely practical view”, noting “complications” would arise.

“Two men looking after a child? Two women looking after a child, maybe. But I’m not sure because it’s not their own child. Unless you have artificial insemination, and its their own child, then you have a certain maternal instinct immediately aroused by the process of pregnancy.”

He said, the time has not come for such a policy. “The people are not ready for it. In fact, some ministers are not ready for it.”

Political watchers and MPs told ST Mr Lee’s views were more liberal than societal views. They do not expect the PAP government to change its basic stance.

Mr Eugene Tan, a political observer, said change would not happen anytime soon but Mr Lee was “painting the larger picture” to show what is considered acceptable evolves over time.

MP Charles Chong (Pasir Ris-Punggol) agreed that MPs should be judged by their performance. PAP candidates are not asked to declare their sexual orientation, he said.

Some members of the gay community told ST they welcomed Mr Lee’s remarks but wished he would have talked about decriminalising Section 377A of the Penal Code, which makes sex between two men an offence.

He is at his wits end.

He will even bend down to gays, just to win a few more pathetic votes.

From his statement, you can tell he say it not whole heatedly, trying to divert and finger the "Society" may not accept it.

Another wayang by MM LKY

This is NOT unlike his "Casinos?over my death body" pledge!

I don't know what he is talking about. His son is gay and has been in Parliament for decades now. His daughter is a lesbian, and his daughter in law is a bulll dyke. With so many homos in his immediate family, why should he object to gays?

LKY's regime denies Sporeans the right to attend international school, but his own grandson is attending the American School

Many have long suspected that there are closet gays/lesbians in the Lee family. If LKY is bringing up this topic it's probably self-serving & an admission that it's true:rolleyes:

Special dispensation is required from MOE and it requires one parent to have external ties. Only on kid did not fit the bill, his grandson.

I agree with the MOE part but i have many relatives and friends who are 100% born and bred singaporeans who have enrolled their kids in international schools too and some of theese kids were also born here too but only that they have lived mostly overseas.
Recently my godson (born here) wanted to enrolled in SAS but both campus were full thus ended up in UWC instead.

It is during the upcoming period of election, then you can see PAP softening up and becoming liberal.

GE 2001...

During elections:
I would want to form an alternative policies group in Parliament, comprising 20 PAP MPs. These 20 PAP MPs will be free to vote in accordance with what they think of a particular policy. In other words, the whip for them will be lifted. This is not playing politics, this is something which I think is worthwhile doing."
- PM Goh Chok Tong, Straits Times, Nov 3, 2001

After elections:
"If you sing Jailhouse Rock with your electric guitar when others are playing Beethoven, you are out of order. The whip must be used on you."

You must learn to follow the news more carefully. Up till polling day, the PAP always has someone playing "good guy" and someone playing "bad guy", so they can simultaneously appeal to different segments of the population.

I wish you had not written what you have written about your friends and relatives.

Both JBJ's sons went to UWC and they are Singapore citizens. If you are not a citizen or a PR is not an issue. His sons were academically brilliant from an early age. They were allowed because their Mum held a British citizenship.

Try and guess what will allow MOE to release Singaporean whose parents are both Singaporeans. It has nothing to do with prior overseas schooling. The current AG did not have 2nd language when he came back from NZ school. He was exempted from 2nd language requirements but required to attend Singapore schools.

It was exact same reason that old man used for his grandson. Here is the clue, it has to do with National interest and our gene pool.

If you check with your friend and relatives and find out what the process entailed, you will have your answers.
