Fugitive faces car theft charge
By Elena Chong
A MAN who had been on the run for allegedly molesting a 16-year-old girl 15 years ago was charged in court with theft of a motor vehicle on Friday.
Tan Leng Hwa, 57, had been extradited from Malaysia last month. Since February last year, he had been remanded there for allegedly kidnapping a 20-year-old man with three others.
However, in February, the four, including Tan, were given a discharge not amounting to an acquittal.
He was brought back to Singapore and produced in court on July 22.
He allegedly molested the 16-year-old girl and wrongfully restrained her at a forested area at Lorong Asrama off Manndai Road on Sep 30, 1996. He is also accused of stealing a $60,000 car at Sin Ming Industrial Estate Sector 8 on April 19, 1998.
Tan, who was remanded, will be back on Aug 19.
