A former jihadist lawyer, who had been involved in the corruption of an Iraqi army officer, was also sentenced to three years'suspended imprisonment.

On Friday, 22 March, two former Mediapart journalists and a former jihadist lawyer were sentenced to a suspended sentence of between 10 months and three years in prison. They are said to have transferred funds to members of the Islamic State to help them leave the “caliphate” and, according to them. The heaviest sentence was for the former lawyer, who had been given a three-year suspended prison sentence. He admitted to having participated in the corruption of an Iraqi army officer in an attempt to spare the life of the jihadist Maximilian Thibaut. While the former lawyer has confessed to corruption, he refutes the charges of terrorist financing. He will still have to pay a joint customs fine of EUR 10 000, together with the two journalists.

They maintain “never to have financed terrorism”

The latter, Édith Bouvier and Céline Martelet, were also sentenced to 10 and 12 months’ imprisonment, respectively, with a simple suspended sentence. They are accused of transferring funds to pay smugglers and thus “exfiltrate” several women from Syria and Iraq. Those who wrote a book-inquirer of French women who joined Daesh were also reported to have taken part in the rescue operation of Maximilien Thibaut. While Mediapart’s former journalists have admitted to being “exit from the framework” of their function, they claim to have acted by « humanité »“humanitat” in an “saving of lives.” On Friday, they repeated “never to have financed terrorism,” claiming to be “shocked by the severity of a judgment” that they consider to be unfair. According to their lawyer, Édith Bouvier and Céline Martelet will appeal.
