Former SMRT bus drivers have found legal representation: It is not M Ravi

I'm surprised M Ravi did not seize the chance to represent the bus drivers.

Peter Low and Remy Choo are not new to these social injustice and rights causes, not sure about the other lawyers Mark and Derek. Obviously this is a good chance to profile themselves and their businesses since this is a high publicity case, compared to other mundane pro bono work like helping low income families in divorces, mortgage issues with banks. The drivers must have rejected the PRC embassy appointed lawyer, quite unwise and a big risk.

Former SMRT bus drivers have found legal representation
Updated 09:40 PM Dec 07, 2012

SINGAPORE - The four former SMRT bus drivers who have been charged for instigating an illegal two-day strike last week have found legal representation, their lawyers confirmed today.

He Jun Ling - whose alleged offences were said to be "more aggravated" - and Gao Yue Qiang will be represented by Mr Peter Low and Mr Choo Zheng Xi of Peter Low LLC.

Liu Xiang Ying will be represented by Mr Mark Goh from Mark Goh & Co, and Mr Wang Xian Jie will be represented by Mr Derek Kang from Rodyk & Davidson LLP.

Bail for Gao, Liu and Wang was set at S$10,000 each, while bail for He was set at S$20,000 as he also faces a second charge of inciting his colleagues to stage the work-stoppage through an online posting. The strike involved some 171 SMRT bus drivers, who protested over inequitable pay as well as poor work and living conditions.

All the bailors of the accused are Singaporean, and the passports of the accused have been impounded. The four will return to court next Wednesday.

PRC may even pay for their legal fees. What if they pay Davinder Singh? Furthermore if let's say embassy officially approach him? How? Many interesting games coming forward.

Believe me M Ravi would have been the first to get his leg in. His firm must be having some difficulties. Or maybe ZX managed to talk some sense into him and get him to step back this time. Either way, it saves us all another round of embarassment.

Yes! PRC embassy should have hired Davinder Singh and that would be entertaining!

From the looks of it, as drivers did not use embassy lawyer, the government would go all the way to deter and give harshest sentencing as already PRC workers are doing their little strikes. If it was a PRC embassy lawyer, then both PRC and Singapore government would strike a deal to save each other and their own face and look good to their own domestic audience.

Especially if Ravi put on make up and danced in court suddenly.

PRC can give you round 1. But round 2, hahahaha. 5000 years of history is too much for a cul-de-sac peranakan whose family had delusions of become emperor by buying emperor robes. PRC is not for a cuckoo bananas old man. I have not brought in the other >5000 years of history from the other continent.

I am really delighted that we have concerned Singapore professionals who are prepared their money where their mouth is. Kudos to them. Big thanks for those who came forward to bail these guys out. The nation's burden cannot rest on the shoulders of a few.

Also delighted that we do not have usual charlatans like Chia Ti Lik and company that grab the headlines and then conveniently discharge themselves and never see the inside of s court and spend more time in this forum cloning around.

strangely, the letter of demand is not directed at Remy Choo Zheng Xi. or did he request that he hide behind the other 3 in case it affects his law career?

I like how his inadequacy in legal matters was highlighted by one of his clients embroiled in some dispute over some NTUC investment linked products. Client blogged extensively about the shoddy work rendered. Truly an eye-opener.

The case may go all the way to the Court Of Appeals if PRC/HK citizens rally around them and provide moral and monetary support.

I guess these episodes (bus /crane drivers) make the constant claim by some person that Singapore can be the middleman or bridge to China (due to his guanxi) a bit hollow.
Even after the Suzhou fiasco, the old man keep on harping on guanxi and Singapore been a window to China for the West ect2.
In case we forget here's a bit of history on their Suzhou disaster at taxpayers expense.
Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP) was built near-simultaneously with the competing Suzhou New District (SND) industrial park. As the Suzhou city government had only a minority (35%) stake in the SIP, while they had a major stake in SND, the city government largely ignored SIP and concentrated on promoting the SND instead.

After incurring losses of some US$90 million over 5 years, the Singapore consortium lowered its stake to 35 percent, raising the Chinese consortium's stake to 65 percent from 35 percent and reducing the Singaporean share from a planned 70 km2. to just 8 km2. The Chinese side appointed Wang Jinhua, vice-mayor of Suzhou and the former manager of the New District, as the new chief executive. In 2001, one year after Singapore lowered its stake, the park made its first profit of $3.8 million

Where's the accountability for these losses.

That would not be the biggest headache. Recall what auruvandil said in another thread ... these chaps (human rights activists) are not fighting to win. They're fighting to make a political statement (the equivalent of SBF rep points in the real world).

If the Tiongs come to understand that they're being used to make a pol. statement rather than receiving genuine representation, they will rebel and the govt will ensure we'll all get another round of backlash. Only the PAP would be smiling then.

M. Ravi and CZX are worlds apart. They have nothing in common. CZX is sensible and matured for his age. Absolutely professional too. M. Ravi is driven by a totally different agenda. They're like chalk & cheese.
