This year, our top O-level scorer hails from Malaysia -- and nearly half of the 40 students who bagged nine or more A1s are also foreigners. This is a wake up call for us, say STOMPers.

On Jan 10, 2011, at 2pm, the GCE O-level examination results were released islandwide. Some shed tears of joy, others, tears of disappointment.

For the third year running, CHIJ St Nicholas Girls' has produced Singapore's top O-level student. This year, Chia Pei Yun, who hails from Selangor, Malaysia, bagged the top spot with 11 A1s. The two before her also hail from Malaysia.

China-born students from Crescent Girls' School have also topped their cohort with their stellar showing of 9 A1s. With just a year to power their English grades from an F9 to an A1, they showed that with sheer grit and determination, it was possible.

In fact, this trend of foreign students coming neck-to-neck with and even outscoring local students has been going on for a few years. In 2007, half of the 25 O-level top scorers were from China, Malaysia and Korea.

STOMPer O-dear feels S'pore students should really buck up lest we even fail to secure a place in the list of top scorers.

Said the STOMPer:

"Wake up, wake up! We must do our country proud!

"Not to say we didn't do well, but surely, with the number of local students currently outnumbering foreign students, we could produce more top scorers right?

"Have we grown too complacent with our results that we fail to achieve -- right in our own country?

"Look at that Xavier Ong fellow -- he's so proud of his O-level 'score', which consists of straight-Ts, as his results were terminated due to his misconduct during the exam.

"Those taking their O-levels this year, it's only January, so work hard and do us proud next year!"

STOMPer rachel also hopes locals will pull up their socks:

"This report in the papers today reminded me of what PM Lee mentioned recently, 'So it's not just that the Chinese are low-paid and cheap (workers), but they are very skillful and capable and they are going to make a lot of progress'.

"He said Singapore has to continue to improve its education system to make further progress.

"While the education system here improves, I also hope the locals will be motivated to do better. If not, they will really be lagging behind."

Wait a minute, being top in an education that uses rote learning? What's the use for that?

And yes, this article shows that sinkies are useless. That is the result of being balless when being bullied by the govt.

There's no such thing as a Utopia...some policies are fucktard, disadvantageous to the lower income level but tis govt is better than govts from Indon, Pinoy, reds n yellows nation, malaya n blah, blah! Only questionable is why their salaries are so damn high? Who are the ones that pegged their salary scale? Fucktard, isn't it? More like putting their welfare above everything!

This is only natural due to the high number of foreigners. Let me explain. Let's assume that the proportion of foreign students in SG is 20%. It is also very likely that these foreign students would be better than the average SG student as their parents are likely to be better off than the average SGrean. If this is not the case, their parents would not be able to send them here to study or their parents would not be likely to come to SG to work. The low end workers are not likely to be able to afford raising a family in SG and are probably working here by themselves.

In a population of 100 students, 20 of them being foreigners who are very likely to be above average students, you will find that the top 50% of students would be made up of 30 SGreans and 20 foreigners. So, this means that the ratio of top students is 3:2 and not 4:1. The fact that foreigners make up almost half of the top students does not surprise me at all. In fact, I would be stumped if this was not the case.
