Engineer stole wires from NUS

By Elena Chong

A MALAYSIAN engineer was jailed for five months on Friday for breaking into the National University of Singapore's Faculty of Engineering and stealing earth cable wires earlier. Wu Wai Keong, 28, pleaded guilty to housebreaking with two Bangladeshi nationals at Engineering Drive 3 in Kent Ridge on July 18, and house trespass on March 25 to steal cables.

He was acting as a look-out outside the switch room on July 18 when a security officer approached him. He fled. She gave chase but lost him along the main road. When the security officer went back to the switch room, she saw Bilat, 25, a Bangladeshi, coming out carrying a black haversack. He fled. So did another Bangladeshi, Sohaq, 26. Both have been dealt with.

The officer found several earth cables inside the room had been cut.
The court heard that earlier on March 25, Wu and the two co-accused had stolen $30,060 worth of cables after the two foreigners had forced open the switch room door to get in. After that, Wu dropped them at Desker Road while he sold the cable wires to a shop nearby for about $1,200. Three other theft charges were taken into consideration. Wu could have been jailed for up to two years for housebreaking. For house trespass, he could have been jailed for up to seven years.

SOUTH KOREAN IN TROUBLE

$30k fine for taking out $7m

By Khushwant Singh

Failed to get cert to prove winnings

Police investigations revealed that Kim had been helping his uncle Park Dong Choel in catering to casino patrons. While the 43-year-old uncle was based in South Korea, he was often in Macau. Kim told police that his uncle and a group of his uncle's friends had gambled at Marina Bay Sands (MBS).

According to court documents, MBS executive Terry Kim Taesoo, 28, told Kim that he needed a certificate from the casino cashier to prove the money was winnings so he could leave the country with it. As it took too long to prepare the certificate, MBS senior executive Shin Jung Whoan, 31, arranged for Kim to receive a transaction slip. Under the impression that this was all he needed to bring the money out, Kim did not get the certificate. The cash seized by police is to be returned to him.

CARRYING two suitcases stuffed with $7 million cash winnings from Marina Bay Sands, South Korean Kim Wooyeong was stopped at the airport and arrested for failing to declare the money he was taking out of the country. It turned out that his uncle, an agent for casino patrons in Macau, had won the sum here with his friends and then asked Kim to bring the money back to Macau on Aug 24.

On Tuesday, the 28-year-old nephew was fined $30,000 for what is believed to be the biggest amount to date to be carried over the border. A district court heard that anyone moving $30,000 or more, or its equivalent in a foreign currency, must submit a report at a checkpoint. Failure to do so could mean the maximum $30,000 fine and/or up to three years in jail.

A district court heard that aviation security officer Eugene Lim, 35, stationed at the Budget Terminal at Changi Airport became suspicious when the X-ray screening machine showed that Kim's two briefcases were packed with wads of paper. A physical check was then carried out and officers found a total of $7.027 million in the bags.

On Tuesday, the driver picked up the China national at Marsiling station and told her to hide in the car boot.

Under the Immigration Act, the penalties for overstaying or illegal entry are a maximum jail term of six months and at least three strokes of the cane.

The penalties for illegal exit is a fine of up to S$2,000, a maximum jail term of six months, or both.

A MAN hiding in the trunk of a Malaysian-registered car was found by Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officials as it tried to exit the island at the Tuas Checkpoint on Thursday. Investigations revealed that the Malaysian driver was trying to help the suspected Bangladeshi overstayer get out of the country. The 21-year-old driver said he was promised RM800 (S$330) by his Malaysian friend if he ferried the passenger out of Singapore.

While conducting checks, the ICA officers heard strange noises coming from the boot of the car, and found the 36-year-old man squeezed into the tiny space. The driver and his unconventional passenger were arrested and are under investigation. This is the second time in two days that someone has been found trying to leave Singapore in this way.

She is believed to have fallen from the fourth floor of block 573, Hougang Street 51.
Police said the case is classified as murder and investigations are on-going.
Police received a call at 6.05am and the girl was pronounced dead at 6.20am.
No arrests have been made.
According to The Straits Times, the girl is said to have weak arms and legs. She had to be supported by a maid when moving around and attended a special school.
The girl, known as Linda, lived with her parents and a maid on the fourth floor of the block where her body was found.
Neighbours told Lianhe Wanbao that the girl was believed to have had low IQ, was hunchbacked and suffered from brittle bone disease. She could not walk, and could only crawl and sit. Although she began learning to walk in the last two years, she had to be assisted by her maid.
According to the reporter who was at the scene, the girl was clad in a set of white pajamas with pink floral patterns when she was found, with many injuries on her body. She was also bleeding heavily from her head and neck, and it is believed that she had suffered serious blows to her head.
When she began learning to walk, her parents often brought her out. Her father is a supervisor at a construction company, and her mother works at OG. They both loved their only daughter dearly, although the family hardly spoke to neighbours. But after the daughter showed improvement, her parents also became happier, and would sometimes talk to neighbours about the girl.
The police have led the family's maid away to assist in their investigations. She was sleeping when the police came knocking at the family's home. It is understood the maid had begun working for the family only two weeks ago. Neighbours also said the girl was being cared for by a previous maid who worked for the family for the last three years.
The girl's mother had gone knocking on her neighbour's door, asking for help at 6am this morning, after discovering that her daughter was missing. A neighbour, who identified herself as Mrs Tan, said that she called the police after the mother came around to ask for help.
When the girl's mother identified her daughter's body, the neighbour said that the mother "collapsed and cried loudly".
A witness also saw a girl crying along the 17th floor corridor early this morning. Neighbours on the fifth floor told Wanbao that police had gone to the 17th floor to investigate at around 11am.
Police have requested that anyone with information on the case should call them at 1800 - 2550000.

SINGAPORE: Two Indian nationals were jailed on Friday for bribing a Singapore Customs Officer.

They gave bribes totalling S$21,650 to former Higher Customs Officer Murgeiyah Subramaniam between July 2008 and March last year.

The 34-year-old, who was working at Changi Airport Terminal 3, would then endorse their Tourist GST refund applications without verifying the items stated on their forms.

This, after he pleaded guilty to three charges involving S$9,000.

The stocky, bespectacled man originally faced nine charges but six of them were taken into consideration.

He also had to pay a penalty amounting to S$21,650.

<!--close .kicker, if any-->iPhone app leads to arrest

<!--start of story text-->POLICE have arrested a serial snatch thief after a valuable lead from an iPhone application.
The 'Find My iPhone' application, which allows the owner of the iPhone to trace its physical location, allowed police to hunt down the perpetrator.
Early on Sunday morning, the 36-year-old victim was walking along Lim Liak Street when an unknown man approached her from behind and snatched away her iPhone which she was holding.
After the victim lodged a report, the 'Find My iPhone' application was used to help the police track down the suspect.
The suspect was arrested on Monday evening, and is believed to be also responsible for several other snatch theft cases in the Tiong Bahru and Kim Tian estates.
The suspect, an 18-year-old Malaysian man, will be charged in court on Wednesday.
