A TEEN was charged in a Juvenile Court on Wednesday with mischief by fire, which caused more than $1 million damage to the Kampong Siglap Mosque. No plea was taken from the 14-year-old. He is said to have set fire to the Marine Parade Road mosque with a lighter at about 1.15pm on Tuesday. About 150 people were evacuated from the building. The roof of the mosque, which had a face-lift in March, caved in and loud explosion was heard. The juvenile, who looks tall and big-sized for his age, occasionally looked at his parents who were in court during the brief court session. A police prosecutor asked for the juvenile to be remanded at Singapore Boys' Home for psychiatric assessment. The boy will be brought back to court on Oct 14. The maximum penalty for mischief by fire is a jail term of up to seven years and a fine.

SINGAPORE: The 14-year-old boy who allegedly set fire to the Kampong Siglap Mosque earlier this month was slapped with two new charges on Wednesday morning.

The boy who cannot be named as he is a minor, was said to have trespassed into the grounds of an old folks home, Apex Harmony Lodge, in Pasir Ris in the wee hours of October 4.

He had intended to steal money from a staff there. But he was discovered.

When he was caught, a student EZ-Link card belonging to another boy was found on him.

The 14-year-old suspect is believed to have stolen the EZ-Link card.

The boy will appear in court again on October 28 when his psychiatric assessment report is ready.

He is now remanded in the Boys' Home. - TODAY/vm
