Fine and ban for fatal accident

<!-- end left side bar --> <!-- story content : start --> A MOTORIST who caused the death of an elderly pedestrian along Upper Thomson Road last November was fined $7,000 and banned from driving for three years on Thursday. Tan Kin Kiong, 59, admitted to causing the death of Mr Lim Ban Huat, 74, when he made a left turn from Jalan Pelatina into Upper Thomson Road on Nov 19. An independent eye witness had stopped his car and was waiting for the lights to change along the extreme left lane of Upper Thomson Road when he saw Mr Lim using the pedestrian crossing and Tan's car making a wide left turn towards the third lane.
Tan's car hit the pedestrian who fell on the road. At the time, the 'green man' signal was still showing. The traffic signal light for Tan's direction was also green. Mr Lim was unconscious and taken to Alexandra Hospital where he died 10 days later, due to a severe head injury. Tan could have been jailed for up to two years and/or fined for causing death by doing a negligent act.
