It doesn't matter how much your wages go up, if the wage increments get outstripped by rising costs of living, you're still a loser.

Precisely. I read this 'signal' of Sinke exponentiol increase of cost of living at at around 1997-98 when the Asian financial crisis struck. It was also these times, when these white scums under GCT then , exponentiolly jacked up their own wages way way into the stratophere.
