JOHOR BARU: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has detained eight Singaporeans for trying to bribe police personnel here. State MACC director Simi Abdul Ghani said the Singaporeans aged between 27 and 66 were detained for offering bribes to the police officers after they were caught for various traffic offences. They had attempted to offer bribes ranging from RM20 to RM110.
"These offenders were held during a three-day joint operation between the MACC and state police which began on Friday," he said. "Anyone convicted for the offence can be jailed a maximum of 20 years and fined not more than five times the bribe amount or RM10,000, whichever is higher," he added. All the offenders have since been released on MACC bail. "Don't try to bribe government officials or law enforcement officers, as the MACC is always looking into these cases," Simi said.
