Drug trafficker sentenced to hang

A 45-YEAR-OLD Singaporean man who was found with a variety of drugs in his home has been sentenced to hang for drug trafficking.

Foong Chee Peng did not challenge the charge and chose not to take the stand to defend himself.

On Tuesday, the High Court convicted him of trafficking in 40.23g of heroin. The death penalty is mandatory for anyone found guilty of trafficking in 15g or more of the drug.

On Sept 30, 2009, Central Narcotics Bureau officers raided the flat where Foong was living and arrested him.

A search of his bedroom uncovered packets of drugs in a paper bag, a bedside table, a bag on the dressing table and the wardrobe.

They also found paraphernalia for packing drugs, such as plastic sachets, a heat sealing machine, lighters, burners, pincers and a digital weighing scale.

The prosecution's case was that the presence of these items suggested he had packed the drugs in his room for the purpose of trafficking them.
