FOR four months last year, Vicky Herman Quek Bee Lan chose her victims carefully, picking elderly men with Rolex watches to dope and steal from.
The 44-year-old woman would visit coffee shops and hawker centres to look for her victims, chatting them up or pretending to be a prostitute and offer them sex. She would find a reason to offer the victim a drink, and would either drop a sleeping tablet into the drink by hand or at times, would hide the Dormicum in her mouth before dropping it in the coffee, said the prosecution. The petite, fair and bespectacled woman pleaded guilty last week to eight charges - four each of administering a stupefying drug and stealing items worth $21,316 from four men aged 43 to 69.
Twenty other charges involving 10 men were taken into consideration. The total amount involved in all the charges was about $40,000. On Wednesday, Deputy Public Prosecutor Adrian Loo urged the court to call for a corrective training report before sentencing Quek, citing a multitude of aggravating factors. Quek, he said, had admitted in her statements that the money she received from the crimes were used to buy Dormicum for herself and for use on subsequent victims as well as Botox and laser treatment to make herself look younger. She has previous convictions for theft in 1994 and 1996, and in 1999, was packed off to jail for 6-/12 years for doping and theft.
