By Gwendolyn Ng

WHEN a commuter boarded a north-bound train at Orchard MRT station on Sunday evening, she was shocked to see a seated woman cradling a dog. The dog, which appeared to be a poodle, was on the woman's lap, half its body covered by a bag.

She took a photograph of the woman and her pet and posted it on citizen-journalism website Stomp.

She posted: "How did this woman get into the train station without the staff noticing?"

The photograph has caused a buzz among netizens, many of whom cried foul over SMRT's lack of vigilance.

An SMRT spokesman explained that only guide dogs are allowed on board trains. Those found in breach of this rule are liable to a fine of up to $500.

The spokesman said: "Members of the public are encouraged to approach station staff for assistance immediately, should they spot someone carrying an animal onto the trains."

Teacher Rose Lim, 56, said: "I know it's hard for them (SMRT staff) to check all bags, but what if the dog was something more dangerous, like a bomb?"

She added: "They should really look into their security system and identify the loophole."

Technical officer Bernadette Ong, 41, said: "If people want more stringent checks involving guard dogs or metal detectors, they have to be prepared that it will take up more of their time."

The SMRT spokesman assured the public that their staff and security personnel look out for suspicious people and items.

The spokesman said: "We seek the cooperation of commuters, who play an important role by being the 'eyes and ears', to help report suspicious-looking persons or articles to our staff when the need arises."

Some, like Ms Kristie Tan, 27, say this incident was not the first time they had heard or seen someone taking a pet on board an MRT train.

The administrative manager said: "I've seen small dogs taken onto the train in bags before."

Singapore really backward country. In Germany people are seen with pets at Frankfurt Airport. Toy dogs are even taken on board with passengers. Here we pander to the muslims who think they must be more muslim than Arabs. Even Osama kept dogs in his hiding place. Muslims armies all round the world are having K9. The prophet is being practical. Arabia is too hot to keep pigs and pigs were shipped by Greek in unsanitary conditions. Similarly rabids dogs are a problem then so you don't want your kids to put their hands into dogs mouth. The genetic make-up of Arabs (and Indians) made them partial to alcohol so liquor is banned. Gambling is a universal abborence so its now called integrated resorts so the hypocrites need something that barks to blame.

Economic sense lah! If dogs are not allowed on MRT trains, then how are those China dogs brothers & sisters going to move around in Singapore to rob, pillage & whore themselves? And not like as if buses & taxis are not public transportation! The tax money leechings dogs will very soon propose in one of their barking get together to pass a bill allowing dogs be it Kennel Club registered or not to be allowed on public transportation and facilities will be built catering to dogs and charges will go up again, Best Excuse!!! Maybe that is the reason why PAP dogs are not seen using public transportation! DOGS ARE NOT ALLOWED ON BOARD!!!

Asia is extremely pet unfriendly. People just stick to the rules without questioning. Small dogs in bags are less risky than the thousands of sick people spewing their influenza virus in MRT. Developed countries are much more pet friendly. Most of the hotels in europe are pet friendly, they impose a surcharge for pets which is fair, given that pets may cause some inconvenience such as additional cleaning up.

If the owners of the dogs are prepared to clean up any shit or urine passed by the dogs, then perhaps they can be allowed on the trains.
The question is whether they will clean up or will they just leave it there and walk out when they reach their stop. I suspect in most cases, it will be the latter.

It's the same issue with eating or drinking on the trains actually. Many people, especially young chaps, complain that it's draconion not to allow eating or drinking on trains. Have they ever encountered milo or coffee spilt all over the floor of the mrt cabin? As the train moves, the liquid starts spreading all over the whole cabin, such that commuters cannot even sit or stand. If eating or drinking is allowed in trains, will the people clean up if they cause a spill? Again, probably not.

It is easy. You need to cultivate that kind of culture, where people have some decency not to spill drinks and food on trains, and make sure their pets have a good pee and poo before travelling, and in case the inevitable still happens, be voluntary in cleaning up. Why is it Europe can do this but we can't? And Japanese trains allow food and everyone bring their own plastic bags to keep their rubbish.

The simple answer is we are much lower in civilisation and hence will behave badly if given this freedom. The truth is probably most Asian authorities find it easier to just ban something if it has potential to cause problems... ban eating/drinking in trains, ban pets in public transport, ban public speaking... so if the solution is always to ban something then people will just behave like robots.

There's nothing wrong with dogs on trains. Most of them are a lot cleaner than the filthy humans the poor dogs have to share the train with.

SMRT securty sleeping. No one ask them to check every bag. That will cause trouble everyone know that.
The CCTV cannot spot the animal when the passenger waiting train at platform/walking in the station?
