JOHOR BARU - The foreign woman who claimed that she was sexually abused by her employer had also not been paid her salary for five months.

Although she was asked to sign a voucher every month to indicate receipt of her salary, no money was paid to her.

State Unity, Human Resource, Science, Technology and Innovation Committee chairman M. Asojan said the state Labour Department had already acted on the matter by compelling the employer to pay the woman her wages totalling more than RM5,000 (S$1,993).

He said the department was also looking into imposing stiffer penalties on the employer for his failure to pay his worker.

He also advised employers to treat their workers well and not to exploit them irrespective of whether they were locals or foreigners.

The department, said Asojan, had acted promptly on the case once it received the report.

"All cases involving claims of exploitation and abuse involving workers will be investigated promptly by the department, whether the workers involved are locals or foreigners," he added.

Asojan said he was shocked when he read the report about the woman but would leave it to the police to investigate as it involved criminal elements.

The Star on Tuesday reported that a 26-year-old foreign worker, identified only as "S" from Hyderabad in India, claimed that she was raped and abused by her employer since she came to Malaysia in 2010 to work as a cashier at a sundry store in Ulu Tiram.

She said her ordeal began last year when her employer started making advances towards her.

She claimed that the man had raped her almost daily and would beat her up if she refused to comply.

The woman added that she had to undergo two abortions, which the employer had paid for.

Johor Baru South OCPD Asst Comm Zainuddin Yaacob said a man in his 40s had been arrested and remanded for four days in connection with the case.
