Charged for siphoning $111,400

By Elena Chong

A TAIWANESE woman charged earlier with stealing a $500 cash chip from her employer Resorts World Sentosa is now accused of misappropriating chips totalling $111,400.

Chiu Yee-Fong, 30, was a croupier at the casino when she allegedly converted the $111,400 cash chips entrusted to her between Sept 28 and Nov 7 for her own use.

She was originally charged three weeks ago with the theft, but this has been amended to a criminal breach of trust.

The bespectacled woman, who wears a pony-tail, was found fit to plead after being sent for psychiatric examination.

The prosecution asked for the case to be adjourned to complete investigation. Bail of $200,000 was offered. Chiu's next court date is Dec 13.

SINGAPORE : A Taiwanese celebrity's daughter who was working as a croupier at Resorts World Casino faces charges of stealing casino chips worth more than S$110,000.

Chiu Yee-Fong, 30, told the court on Monday that she intends to plead guilty and her parents would be making restitution on her behalf.

Her father, Mr Chiu Yong Qin, a regular on Taiwanese drama serials, was also in court on Monday.

Speaking to Channel NewsAsia, Mr Chiu said: "Now that it has happened, we must face the facts and take responsibility for it. We will return the money that was stolen, it doesn't belong to us after all.

"Normally, the time I spend with her is quite little. Here I am probably to blame."

Mr Chiu said his daughter had problems adjusting to life in Singapore since her move here a few months ago.

He added that she was emotionally unstable and communications with her have been problematic. She has been seeing a psychiatrist for more than six years.

Yee-Fong is believed to have converted cash chips, entrusted to her, for her own use between September 28 and November 7 this year.

More than S$11,000 worth of casino chips was also allegedly found in her Toa Payoh flat in October.

Her case has been adjourned for a week for the prosecution to appoint a Deputy Public Prosecutor to handle the matter.

Yee-Fong will be back in court on January 3.

If convicted, she faces up to 15 years' jail and a maximum fine of S$150,000.

By Elena Chong

A FORMER croupier at Resorts World Sentosa was jailed for 21 months on Wednesday for pocketing $110,000 worth of casino chips.

Taiwanese Chiu Yee-Fong, 30, was fined $8,000 or in default one month's jail for having casino chips worth $11,100 outside a designated area.

The court heard that over a period of 11/2 months from Sept 28 to Nov 7 last year, Chiu methodically squirreled away chips on 144 occasions without being discovered.

It was only on Nov 7 that her offences came to light when a relief croupier and a pit supervisor saw a $500 casino cash chip lying on Chiu's chair when she left for a break.

CCTV footage showed Chiu slipping a $100- or $500-denomination casino chip into her blouse from the float of the tables where she was assigned to.

Further investigation showed that between Sept 28 and Nov 6 on another 133 occasions, she had also taken casino cash chips in $100, $500 and $1,000 denominations from the casino tables.

Full restitution had been made.
