A ROBBER had his jail term doubled to 20 years while his accomplice had the 10-year jail term raised to 15 years by the Court of Appeal on Friday. They will also be caned 24 times. Hirris Martin, 22, and James Anggang, 23, had robbed a Bangladeshi marine worker of $50 and a cell phone near the Aljunied MRT station in January 2008. with another man, who is still at large. They were armed with a metal rod and the victim died of head injuries later in hospital. The two men, both from Sarawak, pleaded guilty last May to committing robbery with grievous hurt and were jailed for 10 years and ordered to be given 24 strokes. James was also convicted of robbing another Bangladeshi some 10 days earlier and jailed 5 years concurrently. He was also ordered to be caned 12 times for this offence but had already been sentenced to the maximum 24 strokes. This means that James received the very same punishment for two convictions as Harris, who committed only one crime, said Deputy Public Prosecutor Lee Sing Lit on Friday. The two men, who did not have lawyers, merely asked Chief Justice Chan Sek Keong, and appeal judges V.K. Rajah and Tay Yong Kwang not to increase their sentences without offering any reasons.
