Coffeeshop boss jailed for graft <!--10 min-->

A COFEESHOP owner who bribed an immigration officer in return for facilitating the entry of unknown Chinese nationals was jailed for 10 months on Thursday. Chia Ngee Seng, 47, had earlier admitted to giving two loans totalling $800 and a $200 bribe to senior Immigration and Checkpoints specialist Mah Chin Phock to facilitate social visit pass extensions in 2007. The court heard that he had been operating a U-turn service to help women from China extend their social visit passes since 2000. He would arrange for these Chinese nationals to travel from Singapore to Johor Baru and back, through Woodlands checkpoint. He would charge them $400 to $600 for every successful one-month extension of their social visit passes. Seven other charges involving a total of $790 were taken into consideration. He could have been fined up to $100,000 and/or jailed for up to five years on each of the three proceeded charges.
