[h=1]CHUA CHU KANG TC FORCES ELDERLY RESIDENTS TO LEAVE THEIR VOID DECK HANGOUT SPOT[/h]Post date: 18 May 2014 - 12:21pm

The elderly residents living around Block 121 Teck Whye Lane in Chua Chu Kang are upset over the fact that their town council is removing their hang out corner by ordering the chairs gathered there to be cleared.

The 'cosy corner' has been a place for residents to hang out, meet others and make friends for over 6 years.
What started as a place where some residents met and talked near the staircase became the cosy corner it is today when more residents started to gather there and bring their own chairs to sit on while they chatted to other residents.
Now, there are 11 chairs and 2 benches which are left at the cosy corner of Block 121.
However, a notice was put up saying that the chairs would all be removed in a week by the Chua Chu Kang town council citing that the chairs gathered there are a 'fire hazard'.
The residents are confused as they have been using the spot for a very long time and there has never been any problems in the past.
Many of the regulars there are retirees who visit the spot up to three times a day to chit chat with their friends.
Without the cosy corner, the residents will have nowhere to go as the closest hang out spot would be a round table at block 122. However, this spot only has 4 chairs and for the elderly residents who use the comfortable chairs with backrests in the cosy corner, it is not a suitable alternative.
The chairs and benches there have been there for a long time and from time to time people would move them but the regulars would bring them back and keep the place neat and tidy.
The chairs are arranged by the walls so that they are not an obstruction and some have even been chained to the wall so that they do not get moved around.
The town council explained that the chairs are still a fire hazard and need to be removed. On the other hand, they also said that residents can raise their concerns with the town council and other possible alternatives such as the construction of proper seating in the area could be explored.

It best that the TCs have more standard benches. Once you allow the old folks to bring their own stuff, the FTs will start bringing their own barang and it will worse. And many of them are singles and looking for company from members of the own community which is quite understandable.

spot on! the message will be passed on to the tc, and they will ensure use of standard furniture with decor and designs that boost the void deck, not turn it into a garang guni flea market. also, high end spittoons will be placed strategically all over the area in order for all peks, lau kway bus, uncles, aunties and ft's to practise their throat-clearing and peeing skills, as everyone has caught on to tiong's and neh's habits respectively.

chairs are fire hazard, wtf stupid shit is the TC saying, have they seen conference rooms with thousands of chairs and carpet?chairs are a fucking tool for the support of the human body....anyone here wanna bet $100 bucks the town council is probably filled with shytskins and pinoys?farking joke,u telling me the pinoys are allowed to congregrate in massive numbers anywhere in singapore even in the most obstructive places....but our old folks who has been practising this tradition since the beginning of time are not allowed to live out their miserable golden years on this godforsaken island in the manner they wish?

Those ugly, scantily clad old farts are a real eyesore. They shouldn't be allowed to hang out there in the first place. It spoils the ambience.

You cannot blame yr parents for being ugly. They hang out there in the name of kampung spirit so they can see old friends being drag off by tuayepeh n stay on for the curry chicken session later.

after so many years, pap still have not learn from mistake.

why hougang elderly voted for WP while their counterpart in other places are pap vote bank?

LTK beri smart, know how to use small money to turn eldery to vote for him. Being teochew speaking may help but LTK went a step further. He identified the blocks where hougang elderly like to gather and build toilets there to make life easier for the old folks who need to meet the call of nature. He renov some of the voiddecks, turn them into eldery corners, providing free electricity to them, make lockable cabinets for them to put TV and karaoke set. Some of the elderly corners even have excerise bikes donated by residents. WP only provide the places, electricity and toilets, the rest of the stuff are by the residents themselves, old sofa sets, fish tanks, tv etc etc... That really make hougang special. unlike my current estate which look like a dead town in the afternoon, hougang are much more virbant.

If a threat of fire was the reason, then the TC should make fire-treated furniture available to the old folks. Install fire extinguishers, and make the place conducive and safe. Take the extra steps necessary to make it more homely for the old folks, or anyone who lives there. The old folks themselves should band together, walk into the TC's office and demand their rights to hang out there. It is their neighbourhood and as long as they do not make so much noise to disturb the other residents, they have the right to hang out there.

Cheers!

Whilst locals are being cleared out by the PAP TC in CCK, another PAP MP from nearby Ang Mo Kio GRC ( Yeo Guat Kwang ) shook hands with foreign workers given free movies (up to 10,000 of them) at the Cathay Cineplex.

Wonder how many proper(non fire hazard) seats can be built with the monies from buying these tickets given to foreigners.

Isn't it the responsibilities of the employers to look after these foreign workers?

Why should PAP spent monies on foreign workers when many locals are living from hand to mouth?
