Chinese turn weddings into a mass display of crass materialism

Some of the advice given in last Sunday's articles ("Wedding bells can spell big banquet bills" and "How much should you put in your red packet?") on the monetary amount of wedding gifts is highly inappropriate.

It shows how some couples and wedding planners regard the event - as a money-generating affair.

The red packets for a wedding are a gift of blessing from the invited guests to the couple and their families.

Guests should not be expected to match the cost of lavish dinners thrown by the wedding couple. It is not a business transaction.

If the couple and their families cannot afford the expensive bills, wedding planners should counsel their clients to manage their expectations.

It is sad that Chinese wedding customs have become distorted.

In my opinion, parents must shoulder some of the blame. It's a matter of face, even family pride. You have a lavish wedding with as many guests as possible, full house at restaurant with expensive 10 course dinner. For the parents, they feel proud when their kids achieve that, and the kids want to please their mom and dad.

It becomes a game when the couple then expects those who turn up to cover the cost of the wedding with Ang Bao. Many even hope to turn a profit - double victory in this case, as they and parents get all the "face" they desire, and somemore revenue is generated.

For those whose Ang Bao fail to cover costs, the shortfall then becomes a financial burden if the couple did not plan their finances well. I've even heard some couples say that nowadays, if want to settle down, apply for BTO, do a nice expensive wedding and go for honeymoon - total cost from start to finish is $100,000. $100K for the entire package - wedding, honeymoon, BTO flat downpayment.

$100K!. These guys and gals are telling me, don't have $100K, can forget about marriage.

What has society come to?

Crass materialism? I tend to agree.
