Infamous China cheat Yang Yin has ran out of money to pay his lawyers and is looking forward to liquidating life insurance policies worth S$98,000. However, the Corrupt Practice Investigation Bureau (CPIB) blocked his access to the fund by telling the insurance companies not to release the money to him despite having the Singapore High Court allowing so in April this year.

The elderly victim’s niece, Hedy Mok, who is acting on behalf for her auntie, filed an appeal to the High Court demanding Yang Yin to have no access to the funds as the insurance policies were bought using the victim’s money despite having the policies registered under his name.

Earlier in September, the State Court also ruled that Yang Yin shall have no access to the policies. This resulted in Yang Yin telling the court that he will have no money to hire a defence lawyer if he does not have access to the insurance policies fund.

Yang Yin’s permanent residency was also revoked after immigration authority ICA found that the 41 year old PRC man falsified documents and qualifications to apply for Singapore’s PR. His bank account has been frozen in August 2014 but his wife and parents have successfully left Singapore for China with an undisclosed sum believed to be stolen from the elderly victim who suffers from dementia.

Further to this unfortunate story of a demented widow who got cheated of her life's wealth, there is actually a less well known extended story to it, stretching back to the past. This narration was based on the memories of very old timers in the Hougang area and is not intended to insult anyone or to denigrate anyone's memory, but just to point out that sometimes the heaven work in mysterious ways.

Madam's Mok's wealth can actually be traced back to her husband, Dr Zhou, who upon passing on, left his humongous property and other assets to his wife.

In the 1960s' and 1970's, in the Upper Serangoon/Hougang area, there were three well known doctors serving the residents, Dr Zhou, Dr Foo TT and Dr Poh & partners (Country Clinic). Amongst the three, the most popular was Dr Foo. Some residents did not seem to like consulting Dr Zhou because it was said that he often informed patients that their illnesses were 'serious' or 'needed extended treatments'. For common aliments like flu, fever, etc, more than one visit to Dr Zhou was needed before they got well. Many patients thus turned to Dr Foo for a second opinion or for treatments and would only go consult Dr Zhou or Dr Poh & partners when 'bo pien', Dr Foo was on vacation.

Anyway, Dr Zhou must have strived very well in his medical practices that he could acquire a huge piece of land in the Yio Chu Kang suburbs and built a humongous bungalow. These properties through the inflation of prices over the years brought tremendous wealth to Dr Zhou and his wife. They were childless and due to Dr Zhou's insistence, they did not adopt any child(ren) as their own, inclusive of rejecting the possibility of adopting one very close relative's daughter.

To cut a long story short, Dr Zhou then passed on and as there were no other dependents, left his wealth solely to his wife. Unfortunately, just a short few years later, his wife suffered from dementia and this was taken advantaged by one china national, Yang Yin, a mere tour guide, who then manipulated to have this enormous wealth 'willed' to himself and his family. Indeed, in his facebook postings, Yang besides claiming that this wealth was his (even before Madam Mok passed on), went on to boast that through his expert management, he could easily increase this S$40 million wealth to S$50 million and beyond within the next few years.

If the above heinous act was not discovered and stopped in time by Madam Mok's niece, Madam Mok could very likely have ended up spending the last days of her life, homeless, in ignorant poverty and finally ending in miserable starvation death.

The point being made here is that wealth is but a temporary thing, it can come and it can go in an instant. What is important is that in the process of acquiring wealth, care should be taken to ensure that practices are proper. Heaven works in mysterious and curious ways and human beings often are not the final arbiters of the eventual disposal of wealth.

Cheers!!!

With that kind of wealth, one would think the doctor has gotten rich the old way - through inheritance.
