Perfect casino does exist

S'pore's earliest casino advocate now cautions about their odds for survival

FOR the longest time, he agitated for a casino.

Now that the Republic's first casino is upon us, Singapore's earliest and staunchest casino advocate has apprehensions over how it is taking shape.

For almost three decades, Mr Ronald Tan lobbied the Government to set up a casino here. In 1981, he wrote his first letter to the then Singapore Tourist Promotion Board, proposing a restricted- access casino at Sentosa.

Now 65, the gaming and hospitality consultant, who recently addressed an Institute of Policy Studies roundtable on casinos, recounts ruefully: 'I received a phone call from an officer saying that Singapore was not ready for it.'

Read the full exclusive interview in Wednesday's edition of The Straits Times.

Leisure and gaming are his life's work

OVER the last 35 years, Mr Ronald Tan has worked as a retail, leisure, hospitality and gaming industry consultant. Now 65, he has dabbled in many businesses, from military defence equipment to casinos, F&B consultancy to convenience stores.

In 1970, his link with casinos began when he represented the Genting Group in Singapore and sold travel packages from a 1,000 sq ft Golden Mile office.

He went on to advise gaming companies such as Australia's Federal Pacific Group and Britain's Mecca Leisure Group. He was involved in setting up many casinos, including the Wrest Point Hotel Casino in Tasmania, Star City in Sydney, Diamond Beach in Darwin, and the Christmas Island Casino.

Until recently, he was consultant to InterContinental Hotels, helping to rebrand hotels in the region. He presently consults for several hotel owners and is a regular speaker at regional casino conferences.

In 1981, he tried to save flailing standalone provision stores by overhauling them into self-service Econ Minimarts, designing everything from the chain's logo, jingle and house brands to centralised operations.

The alumnus of Kuala Lumpur's Royal Military College is now working on two books, on the future of hotels and sustainable gaming.

He is married to Serene, a housewife. They have three children - a lawyer, an engineer and an economist - and three grandchildren.

Looking For Brother SilverFox

Sorry was away. I am in mid thirties. Wife and children nil. I don't have any full time job. My approx net worth, never really count.

I can only say that when you go casinos regularly, you get to see regular faces. Not all regulars are winning regularly. You see today they win 30K, tomorrow 50K, next week, you can see them lose 80K easily in a night. The tables, chairs, croupier salaries are all courtesy from them. You see them good, but they could have lost millions already.

What is the purpose of winning money from casinos? More money to spend? In a way it is neither wrong nor correct. Imagine today you win 1000, so you feel happy, and tomorrow you win 2000, so you spend some money on gifts, food, the next week you lose 3000. How?

I am no hero, just putting my philosophies to real life issues. People in general have no good impressions of people who gamble in casinos. Occasion playing is ok to most, just like people buying weekly 4Ds. But when high stakes involved, people generally think you are an addict.

I have no heroes in casinos. The only idol I have is the casino owner...just joking.....Coming to the part of winning money from casinos, what is the next intention? Initial playing 'career' involves losing. Let's face it, you don't lose, you don't learn, and the cost of the school fees can be enormous. But how many of you would step into a casino to observe the behaviour of gamblers? What is so good of observing these people?

You get to see the greedness of human, disgusting characteristics of mankind, these are things which one should observe and not to follow. Look at how some people win. It is not easy to spot a regular winner.

The basic character of a winner,

Calmness. (If you are calm, you basically win half the war)

Gambling Ethics
- Look at how some gamblers (proud, egoistics) showing off their ugly traits when they win a bit of money or losing their temper when they lose or pushing the blame on other gamblers, croupiers for their losing streaks.

If you can be very calm, you can be a winner in a casino. Never let frustrations get to your head. Once you scold the first vulgar language even in your heart, better get out of the casino fast because that is the 1st indicator of going to lose. The day when you can be calm at all times, one will understand how to win regularly.

Never let your emotions rule you. Never let other gamblers' emotions rule you.

There you see, I haven't got into the part on how to gamble yet. Basically there is no secret trick. Just how you calm your nerves. Easier said than done. Have time, go bookshops, grab books on philosophies and read them. I spend loads of time reading, people say read book in chinese means lose. I dare to say, Don't read, sure lose. The part on reading is to cultivate patience and calmness especially for those who don't meditate. I do meditate at times and read. At the same time gain knowledge.

In no time, you can play in casinos regularly and win regularly.

cool and calm also no use.

if you have no luck...all your money gone in no time..

must learn when to run...when to stop...when to fight another time....you stay put on a losing streak, you lose your pants and you lose your house...casino is merciless....it kills, kills and kills again and again...mercilessly. so don't be an idiot and be a hapless victim...know when to quit the table and run for a break....

Casinos exempted from smoking ban in public spaces

SINGAPORE: Smoking is banned in most enclosed places in Singapore, but it is a different story for the two casinos at Resorts World Singapore (RWS) and the soon to be opened Marina Bay Sands.

A casino patron recently wrote to MediaCorp's English daily TODAY, saying she was surprised to see a designated smoking area at the RWS casino.

She asked if there are any "double standards".

The decision to exclude casinos from the smoking ban came in 2008 after a year-long discussion between the National Environment Agency (NEA) and the two Integrated Resorts (IRs).

NEA said "it is a common practice for casinos in many countries to put in place house rules to designate smoking and non-smoking areas".

However, NEA also added that smoking is allowed within casino premises only if smokers "comply with the house rules set out by premise owners".

Following feedback from patrons, RWS said it is looking at better ways to keep out the smoke drift.

In the United States, imposing a non-smoking ban in casinos has generated public debate due to the high spending of patrons, many of whom are smokers.

When Alantic City imposed a ban on smoking in all its 11 casinos, several gaming halls reportedly saw a fall in their revenues.

For more on this story, read Wednesday's edition of TODAY.

Is the Orchid Room smoke free? I'm a non-smoker.

Also, do they have an ample number of roulette tables? That's my game of choice.

Just came back from RWS and had won some money. Not too bad for my first trip there. Some of my observation from my virgin trip to RWS.

The ambience of RWS is certainly much better and grander than Genting. In terms of food and restaurant within the casino, RWS also beats Genting by a mile. I had been eating in Good Luck restaurant almost every week day for half a year and is certainly bored over the variety of food serverd in Genting. In terms of casino layout, I would still say Genting is better as they have special theme room...Hollywood, Latte, Circles Palace etc. RWS seems to have no special designated gambling hall except the Orchid room for singaporean only. The RWS VIP room vs IR, I would say Genting wins head on. IR seems much bigger than RWS VIP in terms of tables. IR even has a stage for staging performance. The VIP room in RWS seems more cosy, smaller and not really catering for the mass market people like myself. As an introduction, I am a small time Singaporean punter and also a regualr full time punter in Genting and I only play in IR. Free food (bf, lunch and dinner) is available in RWS VIP but quality sucks. They served fried bee hoon and fried rice. No live performance in VIP room but who really cares about performance when gambling. The dealer in RWS seems cartoon...this is my observation after my frst visit yeaterday. I even had to tell tham to pay or not to pay afyer they ponder for few seconds looking at my cards...haha. They certainly need a few years to play catch up with the pro dealer in Genting. But who never makes mistakes...even the so call experienced dealers in Genting make big mistakes. I'd received full payment from IR's dealers twice already for banker B6 winning bet costing the lim family few thousands. The pro dealer in Genting knows how to change chips by observing your bet pattern. I have to tell the RWS dealers what chips I want.

Points are much harder to collect in RWS. I colleated 12 poinys from my virgin trip to RWS. I could have easily collected 50 points playing in IR from the same playing time. nevertheless, RWS points could be converted to GP at a rate of approximately 3 times.

My conclusion... 100 dollays levy is too much a cost for long term punting in RWS unless you are a big time roller. I bet $100 to $150 per time and the levy is almost one bet for me.

Bro Silverfox...if you are still around. i would certainly like to learn more from you on your bacarrat strategy. By the way, I am a poker player.

Hi bros here,

Have you heard about drawing sticks to follow the betting pattern. There are a total of 512 sticks each with different betting pattern. If you know about this, please kindly share with me as I am quite interested.

If you just want to clock some fast points for meals or carpark (2pts), just go to the $300 min. baccarat table in orchid room. 1hr of gameplay can earn you 15pts. Enough of 5 meals (3pts) or 5 cans of beer.

CasinoWinner has a very private CasinoBeatersClub and the members go

in groups of three to five together with him.He does not teach the

system, but he tells us to bet when he is confident of the win. When we have

won about 9000 he intructs us to bet $1000 on a single no:or two single

nos: at the roulette table. We have made good winnings from his help.We

only bet three to five rounds in all but time between each bet is from ten

mins to half hour. After cashing in we exit the casino together
