Singapore's first casino at Resorts World Sentosa opens its doors
SINGAPORE: Singapore's first casino opened for business Sunday as the first punter was allowed into the gaming section of Resorts World Sentosa complex.

The opening - to be followed within months by a second casino resort - is part of a multi-billion-dollar effort to transform Singapore's tourism industry.

The doors to the cavernous and carpeted casino were thrown open to the public at 12:18 pm on the first day of the Year of the Tiger in the Chinese lunar calendar.

When pronounced in the Cantonese dialect, 12:18 sounds like "prosperity". A middle-aged Singaporean woman was the first gambler allowed in, followed by an initial crowd of about 200.

The US$4.4-billion resort features Southeast Asia's first Universal Studios movie theme park, which also opened for a week of sneak previews from Sunday.

"We have waited a long time for this. Today's opening of the casino is a milestone for Resorts World Sentosa, for Genting Group and for Singapore," said Genting Group chairman Lim Kok Thay in a ceremony before the doors opened.

"We couldn't have asked for a better time to open," he said, referring to Asia leading the world in recovering from the worst global recession since the 1930s.

Singapore's second casino complex, Marina Bay Sands, is being completed by US-based Las Vegas Sands and is expected to open in April.

Officials hope the casinos will help Singapore achieve its target of 17 million visitors a year generating more than US$21 billion by 2015, boosting the services sector and reducing the role of manufacturing in the economy.

A lion dance and firecrackers preceded the opening of the casino.

Resorts World Sentosa last month opened four premium hotels and is testing the rides at the Universal Studios theme park before it is fully opened to the public.

Singapore in 2005 agreed to go ahead with two casino resorts after a rare public debate.

Opponents feared gambling would threaten Singapore's "family values" reputation and put it at risk of becoming a centre for money-laundering.

As a "social safeguard", Singaporeans will have to pay S$100 a day to enter the casinos.

Cruise ships fight IR

They expect business to dip as punters head to the new casinos

By Tessa Wong

With Singapore's first casino opening its doors on Sunday, cruise ships with gaming facilities are upping the stakes to retain local customers. -- ST PHOTO: ALPHONSUS CHERN
WITH Singapore's first casino opening its doors on Sunday, cruise ships with gaming facilities are upping the stakes to retain local customers.

They have been pulling out all the stops, from offering free cruises to sweetening membership deals - hoping that gamblers will still patronise them, even with a new kid already in town and another on the way.

There are at least five cruise ships with gaming rooms that regularly dock in Singapore. Two of them, MV Long Jie and MV Leisure World, are particularly popular among punters, each drawing a daily average of 500 and 700 passengers respectively. The passengers are ferried to these cruise ships, which are anchored off Indonesian waters.

Many of these passengers pay about $40 to $50 to stay onboard for a day and night, where they will be plied with free food plus free gambling chips.

Asian Cruises International, which operates MV Long Jie, launched one of its biggest promotions on Monday when it gave away free cruise coupons for those with copies of Chinese-language newspapers Lianhe Wanbao and Shin Min. It also offered readers discounted memberships.

It has also sweetened existing deals, such as offering a two-year membership for the same price as a one-year one, and holding lucky draws.

Hi all wishing one and all Heng Heng :

was at MV Long Jie yesterday but the VIP Room , Pearl ,

( Min S$100/-) was

totally empty for the whole day the dealer just sitting there waiting

for business and maybe worried that their job may be at stake due to

RWS and later Sands .

By about 7pm the S$50 tables at the Dragon Room were totally

empty.

Can some good brothers suggest to authority for all these MV Ship

cannot lay a bet ...

i understand that all the big whales or big punters have left these

Bigger loss for Genting S'pore
By Robin Chan

GENTING Singapore's share price slid for a fourth straight day on Friday in heavy trading amid continued worries over its newly opened Resorts World Sentosa (RWS), Singapore's first integrated resort.

There was more grim news after the market closed as Genting posted a full-year net loss of $277.6 million, more than double the $124.8 million in 2008. Revenue fell 22 per cent to $491. 2 million.

The stock continued to be sold down and slid to a near six month low losing one cent, or 1.1 per cent, to 94 cents. It is now down 28 per cent from a record high of $1.30 it hit on Dec 31.

The counter has been traded heavily since its casino opened over the Chinese New Year holiday period, with 366 million shares changing hands on Friday following 369 million done on Thursday.

This is more than triple the average daily volume of 105 million shares of Genting traded over the past six months.

Analysts at Nomura Securities think the stock has further to fall as RWS has already announced the openings of its key attractions - the casino and theme park.

Singapore Authority only allowed ferry in/out from a ferry terminal.
For example, LW small ferry goes to the longsan ferry terminal then to a cruise ship. LW cruise ship just park outside longsan ferry terminal at the international water. The cruise ship have already try to find a nearest terminal liao.

10 years ago, ferry depart Tanah Merah directly to LW and the journey takes less than 30 minutes. I think they go Longsa sometimes in 2001.

Not too sure if it is the Singapore Authority rules. If yes, why there is those cruise to nowhere from Harbour Front?

Anyway, unless they find way to cut short the journey or throw more freebies, I think they will slowly lose out.

For one, I already go RWS instead of cruise.

Hi all,

those who have been to IR sentosa, is there any $25 min bet baccarat table? Thanks all

Minimum stake for baccarat table is $50 & $100. Other tables $300 are found in the smoking section.

Heard that in the VIP rooms, the stakes are skyhigh, even the jackpot machines minimum spin is $100. My wife saw it.

As for blackjack, they do have $25 min bet in main gaming hall.

SINGAPORE : The National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) said there has been an increase in the number of self-exclusion applications since Resorts World Sentosa opened.

The NCPG said it has received 100 applications since February 12.

That makes up about 40 per cent of the total number of applications received since it began accepting them through its website on November 26 last year.

NCPG said there have also been 12 family exclusion orders issued in February, bringing the total number to 31.

Meanwhile, it said that Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) has been responsive in its dialogue on responsible gambling.

For example, RWS has agreed to provide an on-site counselling service so that patrons who may need information and referral for gambling problems can find help on hand.

NCPG understands that RWS has already signed on an independent counselling service.

It said RWS has also implemented the voluntary gaming limit system, where patrons are able to place a limit on how much money they were prepared to lose at the casino.

The NCPG encourages casino patrons to make use of the gaming limit system.

It said it is an important measure to ensure that casino gambling remains as merely recreational as it stops patrons from chasing losses and crossing the line into problem gambling. - CNA/ms

Does anyone know how many roulette tables are currently in operation at RWS?

Also, for the roulette table with the lowest bet size, what is the minimum bet ?

Is it easy to get a seat at a roulette table in the main hall ?

Casino, 4-D...Why house wins, sooner or later

LAST Tuesday's report, 'Overnight, and game for more', describes how two women visited Resorts World Sentosa and did very well at the casino.

One broke even. The other made $1,000, which doubled the money she started with.

It is a great result, considering they played for more than 10 hours each.

But winning is not that easy. Casino games work like this.

Each has a 'house edge'. The women played baccarat where the house edge is 1.2 per cent, assuming the gambler acts as 'banker'. Otherwise it is 1.6 per cent.

It means, on average, the casino keeps $1.20 for itself and pays $98.80 out of every $100 wagered.

It seems like a good deal compared to lottery games - like 4-D big - where the house edge is 34 per cent.

It means Singapore Pools keeps 34 per cent of all the money bet and pays out 66 per cent.

Actually, both are bad deals as you are certain to lose if you play long enough.

Surprisingly, however, you are more likely to lose at casino games than 4-D. It is because you play 4-D more slowly, buying a ticket just once or twice a week.

Casino games are faster. Baccarat, for example, plays at a rate of 60 hands per hour, which is one per minute.

Because of this, even a small house edge - like 1.2 per cent - means you can expect to lose half your money after one hour of play, 75 per cent after two hours, 90 per cent after three hours and 95 per cent after four hours.
