This is simple Maths that we learned in Primary School but it seems that many netizens are unable to get the correct answer.

Try.

Student can choose to void this question as it was set wrongly.
The multiply should have a open and close bracket to be valid

Answer is:

4 + (5 x 2) - 8
= 4 + 10 - 8
= 6

Why? Because this is the Mathematics rule, i.e Order of Operations. http://www.purplemath.com/modules/orderops.htm. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_of_operations.

You multiply and divide first, then do the additions and subtractions.

Some bros here argue that we should work from left to right, so answer is 10! (i.e. 9 x 2 - 8). Based on human logic is not wrong. But, we are doing mathematics, and so it is mathematcal logic, and as such, we follow the Order of Operations.

Some bros here say that this is question is wrong/unclear because they are no brackets!! Actually there is no need for brackets. If you insist that they are not brackets and the question is wrong, you are probably unfamiliar with Order of Operation. If you follow the Order of Operations, the working of the sums will be crystal clear. Answer is 6.

Hope the above explains.

The question is flawed. Without parenthesis, it would be impossible to calculate a definitive answer.
Golden rule: Always calculate the part in parenthesis first.

The question is not flawed. Your thinking is. First off, is there a rule that there must be parenthesis? Without parenthesis, the multiplication must be done first, answer is 6.

4 + 5 x 2 - 8 = 4 + 5 x 2 - 8 = 4 + 10 - 8 = 14 - 8 = 6

4 + 5 x 2 - 8 = 4 + 5 x 2 - 8 = 4 + 10 - 8 = 14 - 8 = 6

Now you know why there are so many MRT train breakdowns.

Our engineers fail their maths.
