<!-- end left side bar --> <!-- story content : start --> A TAXI driver, who got into a dispute with a passenger over his speeding during the trip, ended up biting off a piece of the commuter's ear. Lau Kok Chiew was on Wednesday jailed four months by a district court for hurting Mr Vincent Chow Kok Weng. The cabby was also fined $1,000 for speeding. Lau, 49, had pleaded guilty last month. During the hearing then, the court heard that Mr Chow, his wife and two children, boarded the taxi at the Changi Airport Budget Terminal at about 3.50am on June 20, 2008, after a flight from Vietnam.

During the journey, the taxi was speeding at 140 kmh in a 90kmp zone but Mr Chow kept mum. He only complained after arriving at the destination at Bayshore Park. A quarrel ensued. Mr Chow called the police and demanded that the cabby remain there until they arrive. Lau refused and Mr Chow grabbed the car key from the ignition. The cabby then used his spare key but Mr Chow jumped into the backseat as the taxi pulled away. Along Tampines Avenue 10, Lau stopped his taxi and both men got down and went for each other. In the scuffle, Lau bit off a 3cm strip from the upper rim of Mr Chow's left ear.

Did Chow get a sentence? Lau was forcefully detained by Chow who started acting violently 1st. Looks like the court dont care whos right or wrong but just punishes the guy who wins the fight.

If he was concerned that the taxi driver was speeding, why didn't he tell him nicely to slow down while he was speeding instead of waiting until the journey ended? His wife and children were in the speeding taxi.
And why did he have to grab the ignition key from the cabbie?
I think the taxi driver was wrong to speed and he was wrong to get in the fight, but the passenger should be punished as well.

A TAXI driver, who got into a dispute with a passenger over his speeding, ended up biting off a piece of his customer's ear. Yesterday, Lau Kok Chiew was jailed four months by a district court for intentionally hurting Mr Vincent Chow Kok Weng after a trip in June 2008. He was also fined $1,000 for speeding. Lau, 49, had pleaded guilty last month. The court heard that Mr Chow, his wife and two children boarded the taxi at Changi Airport's Budget Terminal in the early hours of June 20 that year, after a flight from Vietnam.

During the journey, Lau accelerated his taxi to 140kmh in a 90kmh zone. But Mr Chow and his family members did not ask the cabby to slow down.
After arriving at their destination at Bayshore Park in East Coast, however, a quarrel between Mr Chow and Lau ensued. Mr Chow called the police and insisted that the cabby should wait for their arrival. Lau refused and Mr Chow grabbed the keys from the ignition. The cabby then used his spare key but Mr Chow jumped into the backseat as the taxi pulled away. They continued arguing.

Cabby jailed for using force

A CABBY was jailed for two weeks on Friday for grabbing the left wrist of a young woman passenger when they had a dispute over the taxi fare. Mark Mao Pui Mun, 36, admitted to using criminal force on Ms Christabel Su-Huey Sunmungam, 22, at the junction of River Valley Road and Mohamed Sultan Road on Sept 20 last year. A magistrate's court heard that Ms Sunmungam had boarded the Mercedes-Benz limousine taxi at Clarke Quay sometime past 5am that day. After driving a short distance, they had a dispute over the starting taxi fare and she asked the driver to let her down.

At the junction of River Valley and Mohamed Sultan roads, she got down and was about to leave when Mao grabbed her wrist. He was unhappy that she did not pay the fare incurred and had intended to drag her back to the taxi to take her to a police station. When he failed, he called the police for help. Mao, who has previous convictions for voluntarily causing hurt, could have been jailed for up to three months and/or fined up to $1,500 for the offence.

Yes it seems to be that way. Taxi drivers are on the receiving end. Pity them.
