11月20日，亚太经合组织APEC峰会第27次领导人非正式会议正式以视频会议的形式召开。这也是特朗普总统连续缺席三届该峰会后的首次回归。
出于对本次峰会东道主马来西亚的尊重，参会领导人的视频会议背景都选用了官方的马来西亚首相府图片，只有特朗普坚持在某些时刻选择了自己的美国总统徽记作为背景。对此，有媒体解读为特朗普这是在向美国国内政坛作秀。

作为一贯主张美国优先脱离多边合作的一任美国总统，特朗普本届APEC峰会完全有理由再次让副总统彭斯代为出席，一如前三年所发生的一样。但是今年因为特朗普在大选中失利，此前被他所无视的APEC峰会就成了他向美国国内舆论宣传存在感的一个机会。只是特朗普选择的这个时机，似乎有那么一些不合时宜。
在过去的四年中，特朗普一再将美国从各种多边协定中剥离出来，其目的就是让美国本土可以获得更多灵活的资金以及工作岗位。但与此同时，也让美国数代领导人所苦心经营的全球战略受到了冲击。在美国的国门逐渐关闭之时，中国带着庞大的经济体量敞开了开放的大门。

“一带一路”倡议所构建的，一个旨在以人民币和当地货币直接结算的经贸合作框架已经在亚欧大陆上铺开。特朗普政府在全球“退群”的行为无意中为中国规划中的贸易框架清开了一些道路。
在以往的美国规划的贸易合作中，美军所提供的防务和情报以及由于大量发行美国国债而带来的通货膨胀实际上并不是与美国发生贸易的国家最希望得到的所谓“利益”。在中国所规划的“一带一路”框架下，真正得到改善的基础设施建设，庞大而真实的中国市场所带来的吸引力才是真正打动沿线国家，使它们相继加入协议的最大动力。

一贯试图脱离多边贸易体系的美国总统，却要在任期最后的时刻希望在一场多边贸易体系峰会中出场来获取国内的声望，对于特朗普其人来说，莫过于一次最大的讽刺的了吧。
