KAJANG: Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail has won the Kajang state seat in Sunday's by-election.
Dr Wan Azizah secured 16,740 votes while Barisan Nasional's representative MCA vice-president Chew Mei Fun garnered 11,362 votes.
Dr Wan Azizah won by a majority of 5,379 votes.
The by-election was called after the sudden resignation of the assemblyman, Lee Chin Cheh of PKR, apparently to pave the way for PKR de facto leader
Anwar Ibrahim to contest and reportedly become the next menteri besar of Selangor, replacing Abdul Khalid Ibrahim.
However, the conviction and sentencing of Anwar to five years' jail by the Court of Appeals on March 7, which overturned a High Court decision acquitting
him of sodomy, had made the opposition leader ineligible to be a candidate.
