Look at this! Trying to mislead people into believing that the hawker was talking about Bukit Panjang Hawker Center. Andrew loh just lifted the report from the news which was not even about Bukit Panjang Hawker Center and twisted it to fit his own political agenda! What a liar! How can you believe such a douche?

Not at all rosy, says blogger Andrew Loh who is also an ordinary member of Workers’ Party since 2006. But what did Andrew Loh get so wrong?

He got the stallholder wrong
He quoted a stallholder who complained about the long hours without identifying the stallholder, and wrote that the stallholder had failed in her bid for a stall at Bukit Panjang Hawker Centre.
But as record would have it, the quote is attributed to Ms Li Ruifang and her failed bid for a hawker stall was at Ci Yuan Community Club and not Bukit Panjang Hawker Centre (BPHC) as Andrew Loh wrote. How did Andrew Loh get that wrong?

Misleading quote: Was it a genuine mistake or was Andrew Loh deliberately misleading his readers?

Long hours
While there is a ruling that requires stalls to open for a minimum of 12 hours, stallholders are free to get a joint operator with NO ADDITIONAL RENTAL REQUIREMENT. This co-sharing of the store will, in fact, lower the cost for the stallholder because of rental sharing with his joint-operator.

A stallholder may, for example, serve food that is suitable for breakfast and lunch while his joint-operator may serve food that is more suitable for dinner and supper. In this way, the number of hours the stallholder has to put in each day is reduced.

This joint operator scheme is not mandatory but it is an option available to stallholders.
Even if the stallholder opts not to have a joint-operator, having to open a minimum of 12 hours does not mean that the stallholder must be present at the stall all of that 12 hours. There are clinics and convenient stores that open 24 hours. That does not mean the owners have to be at the clinics or stores 24 hours, does it?

He got the rentals wrong

Erroneously applied the flat rental rate for Ci Yuan Community Club to Bukit Panjang Hawker Centre.

That flat rate of $2,200 per stall was for the hawker centre at Ci Yuan Community Club which has a different management.

Stallholders at Bukit Panjang Hawker Centre do not pay a flat rental rate. Successful bidders pay the rent they bid which could well be below $2,200.

Rosy days for residents
While it may be early days yet to say that the new model is a success, Bukit Panjang Hawker Centre is off to a great start with huge crowds that turned up and many happy residents.

As one happy resident puts it, the hawker centre helps to stablise food prices at Bukit Panjang.

Mr Jason Koh, a 53-year-old retiree, said that the food offerings at the hawker centre is “value for money”. He added: “There are only four coffee shops here, and the price is quite high at the coffee shops... the drinks here are cheaper by 20 cents.”

For now, the winners are the residents.
