"90,000+" diagnosed in four days and one day! India's new crown cases keep breaking records, Modi shouts not to be careless
2020-09-14 02:46 Hu Bofeng

[Global Times Special Correspondent in India Hu Bofeng] According to the Indian Ministry of Health, as of 8 a.m. local time on September 13, the cumulative number of confirmed cases of new coronary pneumonia in India has risen to 4,754,357, including 78,586 deaths and 3,702,596 cured cases. In the past 24 hours, India has added 94,372 new cases. This is the fourth consecutive day that India has recorded "90,000+" confirmed cases in a single day. Since September this year, the cumulative number of confirmed cases in India has exceeded 1 million in just 12 days. Compared with the previous month, India reported a total of about 1.98 million confirmed cases in August. Experts said that if this trend continues, the cumulative number of confirmed cases in September will be more than that of the previous month.

At present, the outbreak of the epidemic in India is relatively concentrated, but it also faces the challenge of worsening the epidemic in some areas where prevention and control have achieved initial results. The Hindustan Times reported on the 13th that Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Uttar Pradesh are still the local states with the most confirmed cases, accounting for all of India Almost 57% of the total number of confirmed cases. Among them, the cumulative number of confirmed cases in Maharashtra alone has exceeded 1 million.

Even so, the Ministry of Health of India insists that India has a cure rate of about 77.88% and a mortality rate of about 1.65%. The number of confirmed cases in the Indian capital New Delhi and its surrounding areas reached 4321 on the 12th, breaking the previous record, and the cumulative number of confirmed cases rose to 214,000.

What is worrying is that New Delhi just resumed part of the subway line operation on the 7th, and plans to continue to loosen control measures on restaurants, hotels, etc. According to the “Times of India” report on the 13th, Indian Interior Minister Amit Shah, who had been cured and discharged from the hospital after suffering from new coronary pneumonia, was sent to the All India Medical College again on the evening of the 12th, but it is not known whether it is related to the re-infection. However, a press release issued by the All India Medical College on the 13th stated that the doctor’s order at the time of discharge required Shah to undergo a routine physical examination before the parliament meeting next week.

Faced with the severe situation of the epidemic, Indian Prime Minister Modi once again publicly shouted on the 12th, asking the public to take various protective measures, "remember not to be careless." The Times of India reported that Modi made the above statement during a video event in Madhya Pradesh that day. He emphasized that "before the new crown pneumonia vaccine and specific medicines are available", it is very necessary to maintain safe social distance and wear masks. According to the report, there are currently seven local pharmaceutical companies in India participating in the development and subsequent production of the new crown vaccine. Among them, the "Made in India" Covaxin vaccine has completed laboratory and animal safety tests, and the first phase of clinical trials also showed "significant immune effects." ".

In this context, the "All India Medical Entrance Examination", which has been controversial by all parties, was officially "launched" in various places on the 13th. Earlier, the Supreme Court of India rejected a motion to postpone the "All India Medical Entrance Examination" and the "Joint Entrance Examination for Engineering Qualifications", which had completed all examination subjects from September 1 to 6. As some local states have resumed blockade measures in order to prevent and control the epidemic, it may prevent students taking the exam from reaching the exam room. To this end, West Bengal, Punjab, and Odisha have all issued temporary policies aimed at facilitating the travel and accommodation of candidates, such as temporarily lifting the curfew and opening special subway trains. New Delhi TV reported on the 13th that the government has issued a complete guideline for the prevention and control of the epidemic during the test period, including masks, gloves, and disinfectant for the test to prevent cluster infections.

For most ordinary Indians, in addition to strengthening personal protection measures, they are more concerned about "if they are infected, what will happen to the treatment fee". Although India’s Ministry of the Interior has previously issued a decree restricting the cost of new coronary pneumonia treatment in public and private hospitals, it is still expensive for most Indians. For example, the cost of an isolation bed is 8,000 to 10,000 rupees per day (1 rupe is about 0.1 yuan), and the cost of an intensive care unit equipped with ventilator equipment is 15,000 to 18,000 rupees per day. And this does not include other derivative costs such as personal protective equipment. Because of this, the Indian medical insurance industry performed very well during the epidemic.

According to Indian media statistics, since the outbreak of the epidemic, online commercial medical insurance sales in India have soared by 30% to 40%, and the insured amount has also risen from an average of 500,000 rupees before the epidemic to 2.5 million to 10 crore rupees. To this end, the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India requires all medical insurance companies in India to formulate two new insurance plans based on the treatment of new coronary pneumonia and launch them on the market in July this year. Once the insured is diagnosed, both insurance plans will provide a one-time treatment subsidy equal to the insured amount within 72 hours of admission. Medical staff can also enjoy a 5% discount when purchasing insurance. However, the plan sets an upper limit of 65 years for the age of policyholders. A previous report in The Times of India quoted a well-known insurance company as saying that the two new crown insurance schemes are particularly popular, with approximately 200 to 300 insurance policies sold every day.

Cases don't mean anything because only a small percentage are actually sick.

Estimates already show that 25% of India's population has already caught the bug with most getting better without even knowing they had the virus.

To put things in perspective approx 30,000 people die every single day. India has a population of almost 1.4 BILLION!!!!
