SimplyGoneCase Saga

Some people say we should UPGRADE to HIGH Tech solution like SimplyGo because we want "progress" to become Smart City.

I guess these people are missing the point altogether.

We are not against progress for the society but the New Technology must serve the people's interests and welfare, not the other way round.

1) Most of the time, there are promises of fanciful functions for new technology but the key is, at what cost? Are these functions necessary?

2) Most importantly, are there any compromises on old trusted functionality?

3) Does it serve ALL the people it is supposed to serve?

SimplyGo promises some functions which the people didn't need previously. Using App to add and remove cards, make payments for Top Up, open up usability of credit cards, Apple Pay all other possible electronic wallets for payment of public transport fares etc.

What are the ADDITIONAL COST of implementing SimplyGo vs the tested and trusted EZ link cards? This is not revealed but only the cost of maintaining EZ Link system is put up!

The "additional high cost" of maintaining 2 systems actually comes from the introduction of SimplyGo instead of the pioneer EZ Link!

NOT EVERYONE could benefit from the additional new SimplyGO functions as many don't have credit cards.

There are also concerns on privacy, security and reliability of the SimplyGo system.

It has proven to be unreliable as we can see from the many negative reviews. Wrong deductions of fare, slow updates of trip fares and details while no immediate display of trip fares when it has a track record of wrong deductions!

If everyone is to check on the fares of their trips each and everytime they exit from their MRT or buses, then there will be more access to the system which seems to have insufficient bandwidth!

It is just a matter of time SimplyGo system will crash.

The cost of maintaining such high volume bandwidth as well as hardware to ensure that trip fare data are updated instantly will be humongous.

It is just like trying to an expensive high tech controller with Lazer cutter to help you cut your meat to precise weight as compared to just using your own trusted Chef knife to cut the meat.

High Tech system should not just be used for the sake of being High Tech and should not be adopted Blindly without full consideration on social impact, tangible and intangible costs to BOTH users as well as operators.

Apparently for this SimplyGoneCase Saga, MOT and LTA are only looking at very superficial benefits to customers, ignoring the more important aspects of public concerns while trying to score points for being First and Smart City without much brain.

A rare piece from ST that makes good sense! Why didn't they put this up before CHT MOT LTA made their U Turn?

BTW HK also have Account Based Ticketing system called Tap and Go. Apparently, it can show the fare and card value when you tap in and out of MTR!

Why left that out? Just because it contradicts CHT's assertion?

The names of this Tea booth of mine in Chinese & English have deeper meaning.

For the Chinese name " 茶天下", it literally means The World Of Tea/The Nation of Tea.

But when it is pronounced in Mandarin, it will sound like "查天下", which literally means Checking the Whole World/Nation.

While the English Name would of course means Alliance of Good Tea, which is true in this case as we have brought together the Best Teas produced by two Renowned Tea producing places, Sri Lanka and Taiwan.

It is a congregation of Good Teas you can find in the World, from East and West.

Of course, as a politician, I also hope we have Good Opposition Alliance or Good Politicians Alliance!

The Alliance is now At Tampines Century Square. Rare opportunity to taste the Best Teas from East & West here!

Straits Time isn't that straight forward in its reporting!

In its FB it wrote "Self Reported well-being fell across 15 life domains measured, including relationships, health and household income", but the title of its news article, it tries to mitigate the negative impact by saying "Singaporeans less happy, but those with balanced approach to life more satisfied"!

What's the reality?

The following is the "happiness index" chart published in ZaoBao which was missing in ST corresponding report!

Under PM Lee HL's leadership, happiness indexes have dropped DRASTICALLY since 2011!

"Life Enjoyment" reduced from 75.7 to 42.5, that's 44% reduction!

"Sense of achievement" dropped by a drastic 56% from 65.8 to 29.6!

"Sense of Happiness" dropped by whopping 60% from 69 to 27.6!!!

All these point to one simple fact, Singaporeans' Quality of Life has dropped DRASTICALLY over the decade of PAP Rule under the leadership of PM Lee HL!

Ya definitely my quality of life has dropped with foreigner and local neighbours and strangers harassing me no end and evil doers get away with crimes with good support from each other.

The issue of SimplyGo overcharging commuters UNKNOWINGLY has slowly come to light!

The flaws are much worse than anyone would expect. One commuter complains that she was overcharged about 2 to 3 times per month for the last few months!

Simi "Missing Entry" then charge full fare?

As explained before, if data isn't updated instantly, there will be issue of unreliability when such transaction data will be lost in custody or transition.

Instead of looking for the data or resolving the issue, the SimplyGo system SimplyAnyhowCharge!

I would urge everyone who has been using SimplyGo go and check your accounts regularly just to make sure you don't kena SimplyCharge!

Although in this commentary it uses my key point almost word for word "systems should serve the people, not the other way round", but it misses the whole point on the unreliability of the SimplyGo system.

It's the combination of Unreliability (perceived, real or otherwise) coupled with the opaque of non instant display of fare and balances that form the bulk of skeptism and resistance.

It's not just about communication or how LTA should "sell" SimplyGo. It is about the fundamental flaws embedded within.

I have not bought soft drink from coffeeshop for a long time and I was shocked by the price! Guess how much?

The Worse thing is, the cashier at the counter just told me prices will increase further after CNY!

This portion of breakfast used to cost $4.20 just last year, but it costs me $5.20 now at Tampines Central!

That's about 25% inflation!
