THE Central Narcotics Bureau seized $5.9 million worth of drugs in the first six months of this year - almost $2 million more than the same period last year. Methamphetamine (Ice) and Heroin continue to be the drugs of choice - the amount of Ice seized hit a five-year high while the that of heroin was the highest in two years.
More drug abusers were also arrested - 914 compared to 832 previously. CNB, which released its mid-year report on Friday, attributed the abuse to increased drugs supply in the region - the cultivation of opium poppy in the Golden Triangle gives a ready source of raw material for heroin production.
However, there were fewer inhalant abusers arrests this year - 302 compared to 340 last year. CNB said it is working with the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Community, Youth and sports (MCYS) to keep the inhalant situation under control.
CNB Deputy Director Ng Ser Song said: 'CNB is committed to keep the drug situation under control. We will continue to press on with supply and demand reduction measures because we have a duty to protect the general law-abiding population in Singapore from the harm caused by drugs.'
