43,000 chickens culled in Taoyuan on bird flu concerns

Taipei, Jan. 31 (CNA) Approximately 43,000 chickens in Taoyuan were culled Saturday after the farm raising them was confirmed to be infected with a variant of H5 avian influenza.
As of 6 p.m. Friday, 601 poultry farms in 13 cities and counties had been confirmed infected, according to the Bureau of Animal and Plant Health Inspection and Quarantine.
More than 1.78 million chicken, ducks and geese from 538 farms had been culled by that time, the bureau said.
