3 strangers help nab serial thief

SINGAPORE - Police have arrested a 48-year-old man for his suspected involvement in several theft cases in the vicinity of Jurong Gateway and Bukit Panjang area.
On Feb 25, 2014 at about 10.40am, a 32-year-old woman was having a meal alone at a hawker centre located at Jurong Gateway Road when the man came over to her table and took her bag before fleeing.
She gave chase and shouted for help. Her cries for help alerted three members of the public who managed to detain the fleeing suspect.
The stolen bag was recovered and the man was placed under arrest.
Through follow up investigations, officers from Clementi Police Division established that the man was also involved in several snatch theft and theft cases committed in the vicinity of Jurong East and Bukit Panjang.
The offence of Snatch Theft carries a maximum punishment of seven years imprisonment and caning. A Court order will be sought to remand the man for further investigations.
Commander of Clementi Police Division, Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police (DAC) Melvin Yong commended the three members of public for their public spiritedness. "The three men did a good job to chase and detain the culprit and they will be commended for their public spirited effort. The culprit is believed to be involved in several other theft cases and his arrest has put a stop to his crime spree." DAC Yong added that, "This case showcases the importance of Police-community partnership in fighting crime."
