3 loanshark runners caught <!--10 min-->

THREE more loanshark runners were caught at a road block early on Tuesday morning, as police continue their relentless crackdown against such offenders. Police stopped a car along Sembawang Road at about 3.30am. Their suspicion was aroused when they noticed that the three men inside appeared nervous. On checking, they found bottles of paint, cash amounting to $11,000, bicycle padlock, papers believed to contain debtor's records, marker pens and a pair of gloves inside the car. Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects, aged between 24 and 30 years, were involved in loansharking activities. The trio have been released on bail pending further investigations. First-time offenders found guilty of operating a business as an unlicensed moneylender can be fined up to $200,000 or jailed up to two years, or both. If they are found guilty of loanshark harassment, they can be fined between $4,000 and $40,000 or jailed up to three years or to both. They may also be caned if property was damaged or people harmed while they committed the acts of loanshark harassment.
