25 nabbed in police raids

POLICE arrested 17 men and 8 women for suspected involvement in unlicensed moneylending activities in an island-wide operation from Wednesday to Thursday. Preliminary investigations revealed that the 25, aged between 18 and 53, were believed to have facilitated unlicensed moneylending activities by allowing their bank accounts to be used for the collection of loanshark debts. Investigations against those arrested are still on-going and their bank accounts have been frozen. First-time offenders found guilty of assisting in unlicensed moneylending can be fined up to $300,000, jailed for up to four years and caned up to six strokes.
