2 teens with knife arrested

By Jalelah Abu Baker

TWO youths who brandished a knife and posed for a photograph on an MRT train have been arrested, police said in a statement issued yesterday. The teenagers, aged 16 and 17, were arrested on Oct 26 and Nov 9, and are now being investigated under the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act. They are also being investigated for gang-related offences. They are currently out on bail.

Police said one of the suspects took out the knife from his bag and posed for a photo, which was taken by one of his friends on Dec 31 last year. The young man, who was seated, had his sunglasses on and an unlit cigarette in his mouth. The other suspect, who sat beside him, was smiling. Police are also trying to locate two of their friends who were also involved in the incident.

Their stunt may have been carried out almost a year ago. But it has not stopped the police from coming down hard on them.

Police have arrested two male youth, aged 16 and 17, for brandishing a knife while onboard an MRT train on Dec 31 last year.

They and two of their friends were on the train when one of the suspects took out a knife from his bag and posed for a photo, which was taken by one of his friends.

A photo was uploaded onto the citizen journalism website STOMP.

They are out on bail and are also being investigated for gang-related offences.

The police are still looking for their two friends.

If convicted, the two youth can be jailed up to three years and be given at least six strokes of the cane.

The Director of the Criminal Investigation Department, Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police Ng Boon Gay, said: "We will not allow this kind of behaviour to be left unchecked and will come down hard on such offenders, regardless of their age."
