2 illegal overstayers arrested

By Lee Jia Xin

TWO illegal overstayers trying to sneak out of Singapore through the Woodlands Checkpoint and their driver were arrested last Sunday. Officers from the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) discovered the two Chinese nationals in the boot of the Malaysian registered car while conducting a routine check. The trio were detained.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the two Chinese women, Luo ZhenMei, 39, and Wu MeiXian, 43, had overstayed in Singapore to seek illegal employment.

The two women were charged and convicted for overstaying in Singapore on Tuesday. They were each sentenced to six months' imprisonment and fined $3,000 in default six weeks' jail.
The case against the driver, Lau Han Kiat, has been fixed for further mention next week.

SINGAPORE: Officers from the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) foiled an attempt by a male Malaysian to smuggle two Chinese women overstayers out of Singapore via the Woodlands Checkpoint on Sunday.

The male Malaysian driver and the two women found in the boot of the car were arrested.

During preliminary investigations, the 27-year-old driver, Lau Han Kiat claimed that he was approached by a male Malaysian Chinese known as "Ah Liang" to help convey immigration offenders out of Singapore illegally and was promised S$100 for each successful departure of an illegal immigrant.

Lau also claimed that the car he used to convey the women belonged to "Ah Liang".

The two Chinese women, Luo Zhenmei and Wu Meixian revealed that they had overstayed in Singapore to seek illegal employment and had decided to return to China to see their family members.

Through Wu's friend, the women managed to arrange for their illegal departure by paying an agent in Malaysia S$2,000 each once they successfully entered Malaysia.

The two women were charged and convicted for overstaying in Singapore on Tuesday and were each sentenced to six months imprisonment and fined S$3,000, in default six weeks imprisonment.

The case against Lau has been fixed for further mention next week.
